Launched 10 years ago, the FFB is a nonpro t fresh fruit and vegetable distribution system created and operated by a local board of directors. While the program is open to all residents, it targets low-income families, new Canadians and seniors in Halton. A number of local dignitaries and members of the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) dropped by Oakville's Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) recently to get an update on FFB's progress since it received a $138,400 OTF grant in 2013. "Almost every one of our drop sites in Oakville have boxes that are paid 100 per cent to support families in high need. It's not like it's isolated in one little area of Oakville or Halton, (people in need are) living throughout our communities," said Brenda Moher, Halton FFB program manager. Halton Fresh Food Box (HFFB) is expanding its operation. Participants place orders for boxes with volunteer coordinators at nearby pick-up sites and receive fresh produce on a monthly cycle. Each box is accompanied by a newsletter that offers nutrition information and food preparation tips. "We buy produce in bulk volume, so we get really good prices. For example, they will get a box of produce they would pay $17 for, but they would get closer to $30 worth of items in the box," said Moher. "It's enabling people to stretch their food dollars and eat healthier." With the assistance of 250 volunteers, FFB packs and distributes the fruit and vegetable boxes throughout Halton four times a month. Moher noted FFB has 35 drop sites across the region, including 10 in Oakville. The sites are situated in different areas to accommodate the neighbourhoods.
