A team of 40 Grades 7 and 8 students are on the elementary school's We Scare Hunger committee, which organized a school-wide food drive and Halloween night neighbourhood collection. "Each of the students played a significant role to pull this student-run initiative off and raise 5,873 items," said Grade 8 teacher Julia Bayer. A storage pod is donated to West Oak Public School every year for use in the food drive by UNEED-STORAGE in Milton, holds the canned goods and helps transport it to Kerr Street Ministries (KSM). "It's a huge help to us," Bayer said of the West Oak Public School's 40-member We Scare Hunger team in front of a donated storage pod. According to Grade 8 student Linden Tiel, the food drive ran from Oct. 15-31. "We do this to help less fortunate families around Oakville and make a difference in our community," said Tiel. Help from the neighbourhood Students brought in canned goods from home and then collected items throughout the Fourth Line school's neighbourhoods. Particularly sought were items such as diapers, soy milk and family-sized cereal. "Last year, we collected an amazing amount of 5,013 items," said Tiel. That was topped in this year's drive, noted Bayer.
