www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 13, 2014 | 18 continued from p.16 The 18 kindness crews -- up from 11 last year -- went to a variety of locations throughout Oakville, helping out groups or simply surprising residents with a goodwill gesture. Mariam Manaa and her crew from the Halton Mosque spent the day painting at Kerr Street Ministries. She said the idea behind Random Act of Kindness Day is a message she relays to youth groups. "If you can put a smile on someone's face, sometimes it means more to you," she said. "And that person is going to feel good, and they'll want to pass it on." One new element to this year's Random Act of Kindness Day were the Be Kind Bells. Members of YMCA of Oakville youth RAK Day spreads idea of being kind and giving groups decorated approximately 100 bells, which were hidden throughout the town. "We were tired by the time we finished decorating them," said YMCA of Oakville's Brenda Ridgway, who was inspired by finding a similar bell in Tuscon, Ariz. "But as soon as we started to hide them, it energized everyone." "Honestly, it's such a simple thing to do," said the local YMCA's Sarah McPherson. "The ultimate goal is spreading the simple idea of being kind and giving." Other kindness crews visited seniors homes, carried groceries for shoppers and helped community groups with projects. YMCA of Oakville president Kyle Barber was at Longo's when staff members pointed out a customer who regularly brings them coffee. Barber went over and gave the customer a coffee card. "It may not have been as random," he said, "but it was a great way to repay someone who showed kindness regularly." "Watching the different crews, it's fun and it's inspiring," said Ridgway. "We have to step away every now and then and take a look at things we're doing. This helps us pause for a moment to say, `What can I do to help and better my community?'" At Community Living Oakville, a team from Homewood Suites stopped by to clean the kitchen and art room. Oakville Beaver staff dropped teddy bears off for young patients and new arrivals at the maternal-child unit of the OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital.
