Police ask motorists to take pledge against distracted driving by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 17 | Friday, November 7, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton police have been encouraging motorists to break the deadly habit of distracted driving by supporting their "thumbs up" campaign and taking a pledge during Crime Prevention Week (Nov. 3-7). Halton police have issued 6,916 tickets for distracted driving already this year -- exceeding the 6,857 handed out during all of 2013. In support of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) week-long crime prevention initiative, Halton police launched their "Thumbs Up Against Distracted Driving" campaign. "In 2013, distracted driving caused more deaths than impaired driving in Ontario," police said in a release. "It is also a direct cause of 30-50 per cent of collisions, yet people continue to ignore the warnings and choose to drive distracted, putting not only their lives at risk but everyone around them." Halton residents are being asked to take the pledge to stop distracted driving by visiting www.haltonpolice.ca/HRPSPledge.
