www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 6, 2014 | 20 Oakville to trim trees near hydro lines in early 2015 The Town of Oakville will begin trimming trees that are encroaching on power lines in east-end neighbourhoods next year in an effort to reduce safety hazards and prevent power outages. The work will be completed on behalf of Oakville Hydro and is scheduled to start in January. A public open house will take place on Nov. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Town Hall for residents to learn more about the process. Currently around 18,000 municipal and privately owned trees are part of the Town's hydro clearing program. "Regular pruning generally makes trees structurally more resilient to extreme weather events such as ice storms," said manager of forestry services John McNeil. The Town prunes trees on a threeyear cycle following the Electrical Safety Authority's (ESA) industry standard, which requires a minimum three-metre clearance above electrical wires. "Our arborists inspect trees to ensure safe clearance around power lines to minimize potential hazards. The town uses professional tree service contractors skilled at maintaining the health of the trees," McNeil said. When power lines are located in backyards, workers will access the hydro easement through the property. The Town is also advising residents that in some cases trees deemed to be hazardous may require removal if "satisfactory pruning" cannot be completed. Residents will be contacted if a tree requires work beyond routine trimming. More information and a hydro line clearing zone map can be found at oakvillehydro. com.
