You know the scenario. You stroll confidently into the dealer showroom, and suddenly you stop, dumb struck and slack-jawed, frozen in your tracks, gawk ing and blinking like some tranquilizer-stunned herd beast. Sports car! Yikes. Hold onto yer bankbooks! You stumble forward a step or two, magnetically drawn by the tractor beam tug of sports car styling and sexiness. Your brain shifts low into first gear, your brow furrows and suddenly you can't remember a single good reason why you shouldn't buy a mus cle-bound two-seater Viper. Household budget? Heck, buy less food. Kids? Uhh, what kids? Eventually, out of this turmoil, sanity returns. Since Chrysler introduced cab forward architec ture to the automotive market, many customers have depended on the Intrepid as their no-nonsense entry into the large car market. Intrepid is Chrysler's fullsize mainstay, a roomy bread and butter sedan that other standard performance and luxury features. A base Chrysler Intrepid SE with 2.7 L 200 hp V6 starts at $26,775. A mid-level Intrepid ES bumps up the amenity list and price to about $28,220. A top-of-the-line Intrepid R/T starts at $31,970 and, as tested, complete with AM/FM/Cassette with 4-disc CD changer and 9-speaker audio ($585), power sunroof ($895), leather seats ($840) and fullsize spare ($200) tops out at $34,490. The more you add, as you can see of course, the higher the price. But even at this fully loaded limit the Intrepid R/T sits well below the $40K plus price level of DaimlerChrysler's premium performance sedan - the 300M. The 2002 Intrepid R/T offers a reasonable alter native, family sedan passenger and payload room with a performance edge thrown in. So, sure, dream about that Viper. But who said you can't have fun in a four-door?
