SAL E MANAGEMENT: EASTERN HOLSTEIN SALES INC., CARDINAL, ONT. and LLOY(D WILSON AUCTIONS, UXBRIDGE, ONT. 416-852-3524 Let's Get Growingf By Harry Van Belle December Calendar My Cyclamen has fînîshed blooming, and 1 would like to, keep it over until next year, how dolI preserve them? After flowering do flot let the plant dry out, keep the foliage growing by regular watering and keep the plant in a cool spot with lots of light, such as a north window. Do not over water to the extent that the stems start to rot, the best is to, water them early in the day, so that the stems wilL be dry at night, and always water with luke warmn water. During the summer place pot and ail in the garden in a well drained sandy spot, and gradually let it dry out, then in September repot them and bring them into- the house. Cyclamen do fthe best in a cool location. We have a lot of problems 1with rabbits and deer eating> the stems of our small fruit trees, how can we protect them? There are a couple of ways, the first is to place a plastic sleeve around the trunk of the tree, these are made in such a way that they expand as the tree grows older, and can be lef t on the trunks for several years, these are called tree guards and can be bought at any garden centre. The next best way to protect them, is to spray or paint the trunks with a repellent which rabbits and deer hate to taste. Often with the tree guards they only protect the bottom 3 feet, and with a heavy snowfall, you may have to apply this repel- lent to the bottom branches, this repellent is also available from your garden store. Christmas tip: Keep the children away from the berries on the holly and the mistletoe, and neyer let them eat them since they are poisonous. Keep the Christ- mas tree in a bucket of stone or sand and then add water to the container to keep the tree from drying out, and remove the tree as soon as the Christmas season is over, since the live trees are easily burned. When should we start to take the geranium cutting «? You can start them now, he only problem is that they will become leggy due to lack of light, 'but it can be an interesting experiment to try a few now and see whether you can get them started and how tali they will grow. Lt will require some pruning before the sprîng season starts. The best time of the year is the month of February, then you can take the cuttings, get them started and have themn in a good fresh state for growing in the garden. We planted some ever- greens this faîl, do we need to do anything to them before the winter sets in? The main thing is to water them as long as the soul is flot frozen, even right up until Christmas, this will Rive them the needed moisture for the winter m6nths, when no moisture drains into the soul. Lt might be wise to cover the soul with a mulch of peatmoss or cocoabeans to keep the soul from freezing and thawing. We have a Swedish ivy which is growing too long, can we prune back the stems, and how far can they be pruned back? Swedish ivy is one of the easîest to maintain, they can be pruned back anytime, and as far baek as you like, usually they are trimmed back, so that they, are in good shape again. Try to root some of the stems, they are easy to root, and will produce new roots in about three weeks. Use perlite as a rooting medium, then they are easily transplanted into their own pots after- wards. Until next week, happy gardening. Letter to Editor To Ail Litter Bugs: Around the end of September I noticed bags of garbage along highway no. 2 at the west end of Bowman- ville that had been gathered by The Outreach Committee of St. John's Church. 1 was amazed at the quantity of litter that they had gathered in such a short distance.. I often walk that part of highway no. 2 fromn the bus shelter to the intersection of highway 57 or Martin Road North, a comparatively short distance. Two weeks ago I counted the pieces of litter in that short distance of three- tenths of a mile, a total of 264 pieces of garbage, POP cans, cigarette boxes, candy bar papers, Kleenex, coffee cups, lunch boxes, cardboard boxes, pieces of clothing, even a tire, a few beer bottles, but the ones who discard these seem to prefer to break them on the hîghway in hopes that some- one- wilI ruin a tire on- the broken glass. Now, .aIl this trash has accumulated in two months on one side of this road. We live in a beautiful country, why deface it with garbage? Some service stations provide litter bags for your car, why not get one and use it? I would like to commend The Outreacti Committee of. St. John's Church for their interest in the appearance of our communi- ty.
