The pupil teacher ratio for elementary sehools now stands at 21.68 to 1. There are 12,415 students in elementary schools across the school system and elementary teachers total 572.6. In secondary schools, 452.9 teachers are teaching a total of 7,734 pupils and the ratio of pupils to teachers stands at 17.08. Finally, there are 115 developmentally handicapped pupils under the board's eurisdiction. They are taught by a staff of 14 and the pupil-teacher ratio is 8.2 to 1. Sehool board members are considering changes to the structure of the board's stand- ing committees. A task force, of trustees will submnit recom- mended changes in the comn- mittee structure to a meeting of the Board of Education in December. The work of students should be used to decorate the board room of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education. This is one of the recom- miendations from a communi- cations committee which met recently in order to consider how it can improve the flow of information in the school system.
