D &R Sports Minor Atoms Surpris. Ajaox wth 4 The D & R Sports Minor Atoms were soundly beaten by Ajax 9 - 4 in their first meeting of the year at Bowma nville on October 2th. However, the return match at Bowmanville on October 27th showed that our kids really aren't pusb- overs. A superb team effort brought tbem away with a well deserved 4 - 3 win. Sc oring for Toros were Gareth Stone 2 goals, and 1 assist, Brad Carnegie 1 goal and assist, Jeff Laird 1 goal and Mark Tripp 1 assist which set up the winnîng goal by Stone. The steady goaltending by Burke Lush was a very great asset. On October 28th, the boys travelled.to.Markham. Again Tolo âPoe.'W'es On Thursday, October 25 the Pee Wee No. 2 boys travelled to Bay Ridges only to lose 7 - 1. After a very steady opening and jumping to an early one goal lead, a series of minor penalties finally put our boys at a disadvantage by tiring them out. Althougb only one goal was scored on a power play our legs man out after killing off so many. ,Bowmanville's only score was by Brian Grabko, unassisted. SA special men tion should be made to Pat Mastrangelo who beld our team in the game for so long. Saturday, November 27, proved quite a different matter as our boys travelled to Whitby and regrouped to win 6- 2. October 20th the Delta Faucet Toros played their 2nd league game, losing 4 to 1 to Ajax, but improving in many ways. I saw some good passing plays developing. The Bulîs handed out very few good hard checks, Ajax hand- ed out many, particularly their- defence, sending our forwards rolling time after time. Toro defenceman Robbie McEachern was one player who did hand out some good hard checks and goalie Ken I~-3 in excellent team play sbowed the great talent that exists on this team. Darrin Bunker was a real stand out as be beld the Markham team scoreless for two periods by turning away numerous good scoring chances. Unfortunately, witb two of our players Britt Cole and Mark Tripp unable to play due to illness, the pace caught up to the boys in the final period. Markham scored 3 unanswer- ed goals in the final five minutes to steal a win by 4 - 3. Two Toro goals were disallow- ed. Scoring for the Toros were 'Gareth Stone, 1 goal unassist- ed, Scott Munro 1 goal, Brad Carnegie, 1 goal unassisted, Chris Hall 1 assist. go. i T.om Bowmanville opened the scoring in the first period on goals by Mike Day from Brad Bamsay and Richie Smith and Brad Bamsay from David Stone. The second period saw a, flurry of goals scored. Brad Bamsey's second goal from Davids Stone, Bob Hellani from Brad Bamsey and Mike Murray, Brad Bamsey, assisted by Steven Baker, and Mike Murray, unassisted. Congratulations Brad on a bat trick. The third period proved to he Whitby's, as tbey rallied for two goals to bring the score dloser. Once again, Phil Bird play- ed an outstanding game in net for our team. Pie, Wees !ex4 tol1 Cameron played a good game in net, Greg Martin playing OK hockey too. Forty-tbree seconds of play Murray Henderson banged in the first goal of the game for Bowmanville assisted by Pete Hughes and Mark Hickey. Seven penalties were banded out to the Bulîs throughout the game, contributing to the loss, bit No. 3 for Bowmanville getting 3. Fll bet Ed bad a figbt witb bis girl friend. Ajax getting 2 penalties. Bowmanville started off their attack well when tbey scored the only goal of the first period at the 8:34 mark. Darcy Huber let a slap shot go which Whitby's goalie couldn't stop. Less than a minute into the second frame, Whitby's Dave Donaldson evened the score with a power play goal. The Toros again took the lead at the middle point of this period. Darcy Huher took a shot on net and Deryk Clark picked up the rebound and put it in the open corner. Scott Heard also assisted on Clark's goal. From this point on ail the scoring.was done by Withy. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 31, 1979 9 Sûott's Colonel Novices Could Use More Players Bowmanville Novice Toro's, sponsored by Scott's Chieken Villa in Bowmanville have started the year off different- ly, instead of a full roster, - thirteen skaters and two goaltenders, the Novice Toros have had to play their first three games with 10 skaters and one goaltender. There is stili room on the teamn for novice age players (born 1971-72). Anyone wishing to play in this age group, please contact Dean Rutherford at 623-4264. This year's novice hockey players shooting for the N.H.L. some day are: Mike Coîbourne, Tofiy Vanhoof, Barry Edmundson, Shane Armstrong, Richard McCheyne, Ian Knight, Troy Mutton, Jeromy Laird, Steve Smith, Jim Pithie, Scott Hawthorne, Coach Dean Rutherford. Manager Rob Conkwright, Tramner Dave Hargreaves. The teamn started regular league play on Saturday, October 13, 1979 at the Bowmanville Arena on a winning note over the Port Hope Novices. The final score was 5 - 1 in favor of Bowmanville. Goal scorers for Bowmanville were Scott Hawthorne, Troy Mutton, Jeromy Laird, Shane Armstrong and Tony Vanhoof, assists going to Troy Mutton, Steve Smith, Shane Armstrong and Tony Vanhoof. This game for most of the kids on the ice held a fîrst. During the second period one of the Bowvmanville defenders feil on the puck in bis own goal crease. A penalty shot was awarded to Port Hope. Mike Coîbourne played the angle perfectly and the Port Hope player was forced to shoot just wide of the net. The second game played by the novices was in Oshawa. Our eleven- players came up against a full roster of Oshawa Triple "A", well disciplined hockey players. We came out on the short end of a 21 - 3 score. Something has to be said about our gallant little guys who, certainly out- classed, neyer gave up even at the final -whistle. Our goals were scored by Ian Knight (2) and Jim Pithie, assists going to Shane Armstrong and Tony Vanhoof. Our goal scoring was spread throughout the entire game, one coming ili each period. Although we corne up against the Oshawa Triple "A"s again in our sehedule, it is only fair to our novices to adi= everybody, we are a sige"A" club and the Triple "A" only compete against us during league play' for competition. They are in a different playoff series. On October 20, 1979 our small group of game boys took on a full crew from Ajax and beat them 1 -0 on a goal scored late in the second period by Troy Mutton assist Scott Hawthorne. With some strong goaltending from Mike Col- boumne and a fine defensive effort by Barry Edmundson, Steve Smith, Richard McCheyne and Scott Hawthorne our teamn preserv- ed the win. A great teamn effort. Home games for the novice tearn are Saturdays at 1 p.m. in Bowmanville Memorial Arena. NIght HwsBo(, October 24 High single - L. Coombes 274. High triple - D. Verleysen 633.
