With the right clothes, people with moderate in- comes can look prosperous. Likewise, moderately priced homes can look more ele- gant with the proper choice of attractively styled acces- sories, such as windows and doors. "Quality craftsmanship" and "distinctive styling" have always been ke, phrases in the selection of building materials for a house. For years, however, "quality" and "style" have meant "expensive" or "custom-made." That's no longer the case. With today's precision- engineered, wood windows and panel doors, the "cus- tom" look is obtainable at a moderate price. Wood win- dows and decorative panel doors, vwhich can add beauty and richness to any home, are available in a variety of styles and sizes at local building supply outlets. Where something com- monplace is expected, something out of the ordi- nary, such as wood panel doors with fan or cathedral lights, adds interest and character to a home. Wood panel doors usually have four, six or eight panels topped by a series of fan- shaped glass panels or round-topped, small win- dows. Variety in window styles also adds to the elegance of a home's appearance. The attractiveness of a particular window style can enhance both the interior and exter- ior of your home. Bow win- dows, for example, have an elegant, outward curve, providing an expansive view. Bay windows, which offer you the same advan- tages, are straight in the center and angled at each end. 623-5581 The Name You Can Trust in Broadloom DoddSouter BROADLOOM 136 KING ST. Ex-Nurse Studies Design Fulfills Lifetime Desire In an exclusive interview with the "Canadian States- man", we found the expres- sion "Women on the Go", most fittingly described the interesting, active, and varied career of Mrs. Jeanne Slemon, Martin Road, North, Bowman- ville. A nurse before ber marriage to Dr. Keith Slemon, Jeanne has successfully combined the role of wife, mother to Virginia, Paul, Laurie and Mark, business woman, and church worker. She has also found the time to enjoy the busy social life of the town with friends of all ages. Widely travelled, she has taken part in many presenta- tions of the popular shows "Cornz A Poppin" singing, dancing and acting in many of the musical numbers and skits pro duced through the years. Among the sports she enjoys are tennis, badminton and swimming. She is also an accomplished artist and enjoys sewing, cooking and entertaining. Five years ago while recuperating from a series of back operations Jeanne had the opportunity and time to do something she had always wanted to do. "Design her own home". In anticipation of this dream she had taken several design courses at Ryerson 12 years ago and also the New York School of Design correspon- dence course. "It is important to dis- tinguish style from fad," Mrs. Slemon said. An example of the type Qf fad design that disturbs the decorator is the industrial style which features beams, pipes and rubber hoses rolled up on the mantle- piece. In designing her own home, Jeanne Slemon did the archi- tectural drafting to scale, and then presented it to the contractor who put in the elevations. The finished product was not unlike the original plan she had drawn up. Since that time, the talented Bowmanville resident has designed four homes including that of her Martin Road neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hockin, and begun a career as a decorating consultant. Working as a decorating consultant for Rousseau's Heritage House in Whitby, for four years, before leaving last June, she did both house calls and in-office consultations. It is most essential for a decorating consultant to get to know as much about their customer's life style as possible, as well as the colors and type of decor they prefer, in order to know what works for them. A decorator does more guiding than anything else, for while most women have a great grasp of color and good ideas, many do not have the time to spend on locating suitable decorating materials, furniture and accessories, if they are working, or busy with a young family. A good decorating consultant will know where and how much these requisites will cost or may be found. The most important thing for anyone interested in becoming a decorating consultant to remember is "that every home must be kept individual". It is very important not to duplicate. Also, no one style or trend is ever right for everyone. Mrs. Sieniui now hopes to eventually open her own store, and is presently looking into this next step in her career. h
