4 The Canadian Statesman, Bethany ine Golden Star Senior Citizens were hosts for a bowling compeition with the Cobourg Senior Citizens. Three gaines were played with much good natured fun among the forty-four players. The president. George E. Clark, welcomed the visitors and presented a trophy to Jessie Ellicott for ladies' high single and Leonard Driver for men's high single. Luicky triple trophy was won by Pat Staples, with a score of 450, and Leonard Driver with 475 and Alex Clayton witb 504. A hidden score of 145 was won by Belle Smith. Scores for the Golden Stars for three games were: high lady - Jessie Ellicott - 550; high man - Tom McKellar - 510; runner-up for the ladies was Gertie Clark - 491; runner-up for the men was Leonard Driver - 475. Other scores over 400 for three games: Belle Smith - 461, Margaret Wright - 460, Earle Parrott - 442, Irene MacDoanld - 415, Mary Finney - 404, Florrie Driver - 402. Women's Institute The president, Mrs. Glen Preston, welcomed the members and several visitors to the May meeting and minutes and financial report were read by Mrs. R. Porteous. The roll caîl "Naine an article that pollutes" was readily answered, and a collection of $17.90 as a donation was forwarded to the "Mental Health.Society". On behaîf of the Women's Institute members Mrs. Violet Carr presented gifts to the members of the 4-H Club. Provincial honours were won by Susan Ryley and Cheryl Preston, and County honours were won by Angela Preston, Terry Hurren and Laurie Sisson. 1A donation of five dollars is to be forwarded to Millbrook Fair Bd. to be used as prizes in their Spelling Bee, and the Institute members will contri- bute articles for a W. display with a Centennial theme. 1Mrs. Addison Scott gave a detailed report of the recent District Annual held at Mill- brook. Six Bethany members attended. Mrs. R. Jarvest gave a report of the last class in "Neediepoint", which she and Mrs. R. Porteous instructed. Eight members completed this course and exhibited a sample of their work, making a total of 36 ladies who have received instrýuction. Mrs. Agnes Howse of Yelverton invited the Bethany members to accompany the Yelverton ladies on a bus trip to Curve Lake Indian Reserve and Hutchinson House in Peterborough on May 23rd. The program was in charge of Mrs. E. Weatherilt's group on "Agriculture and Canadian Industries. " Mrs. R., Porteous gave comments on the motto, "Let's make pollution our problem so that our children can enjoy the future." A panel discussion on the ever present water pollution problem with Lucy Borrow as moderator, Ruth Jennings as Mrs. Muddy Water, Carolyn Porteous as Mrs. Crystal Lake and Margaret Weatherilt as Mrs. l'mn Aware. The era of plenty is over. We must conserve our energies and our resources for. the sake of future generations. A delicious lunch of fruit salad and cookies followed, and va Porteous expressed thanks to the hostess group. The next meeting, June youn support. Rememben the Manvers Arts and Craf t Festival on May 26th and 27th - it's biggen and better than last year! 1 And the Choir on May 25th with Billy Meek - there has been much effort put into this project, too. A well attended meeting of the Peterborough Deaneny Council was held in the St. Paul's Parish Hall on Tues., May 15th, when Lay Members to-Synod and members of the Deanery Council met.
