Representative Buying a Good Bull When a cow-calf operator chooses a herd sire, he's making a decision that will affect the number of pounds of calf for sale next year. The Producer should be looking for a bull that will grow quickly and make the best possible improvements in the berd. Facts on productivity- are available to help -Producers select the right bull. One of the most important economic' traits to consider when buying a bull is the growth rate. There's more to performance than growth rates. However, growth rate is- closely related to feed efficiency, length of time to market and market weight. One good source of fast gaining bulîs is the open bouses and bull sales held at Beef Performance Test Sta- tions. Groups of buils are fed and tested for 180 days from weaning. Growth rate indexes and other performance data are provided at the open bouses. Test Stations are located at Colleges of Agricul- tural -Technology in Kempt- ville, Ridgetown and New Liskeard and the Arkell Research Station near Guelph. However, there's no sure-fire way to pick a good, young bull who will improve calving ease in the herd. The best guideline so far is to buy a caîf sired by an easy calving bull and born unassisted. Farm Public Relations Meeting Representatives of various agricultural commodity groups from Durham County met April 25th at the Bowman- ville Agricultural Office. A committee was selected to investigate the promotion of farm products and improve the image of the farmer within the county. The committee members are as follows: Chairman- Don Rîckard, Secretary-Treasurer - Judi Stevens, Don Welsh, Francis Jose, Dianne Moore, Mary Lou Malcolm and John Sikma. Home Economics Footnotes Linda Caldwell, Home Economist Durham County 4-H Home- making Clubs will be meeting for an Achievement Program as the finale to the project "Accessories - The Final Touch". The program will be held on Saturday, May 5th, 1979 at Maple Grove United Church Hall commencing at 10:00 a.m. The members will display their sewing projects and present skits and exhibits related to Accessories. This project taught members how to choose, care for and wear accessories to enhance their wardrobe. Each member was required to sew one or two articles, depending on their age. On display will be the hats, scarves, beits, shawls and purses completed by the members.
