8 The Canadian Statesman, bowmanville, May 2, 1979 Section Two Mitchell's Corners School Holds Annual Fair Proud students of Mitchell's Corners School had Week projects to their parents and friends at a the opportunity to show their special Education school fair and open house Friday. In the junior category at a school fair held in Mitchell's Corners last week, Alison Cole won first prize. She is shown here with her prize-winning model of an airport. Alison is a grade three student at Mitchell's Corners Public School. David McIntyre, a grade six student at Mitchell's Corners Public School, won first prize among grades four, five and six with this model of a ship. David's model was entered in a school fair held last Friday. Parents enjoyed exhibits ranging from woodworking to baking.1 Newtonville Mr. and Mrs. Jim Acke of Hamilton were recent visitors here with her sister and her husband Mr. and Mrs. DeSmit. Mr. Bob Coatham of Red Deer, Alberta was a supper guest last Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Glen Stapleton and family. Please take not of change of time of the 4-H Achievement Day, "Accessories, Final Touch", to be held in Maple Grove United Church will now be on Saturday, May 5th at 10 a.m. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Merrill, of Campbellford were weekend visitors here with his sister, Mrs. Bea Jones. All three attended the card party in Community Hall, Friday evening and all assisted with the Banquet in Newcastle Community Hall Saturday evening and attended our Church service, Sunday morn- ing. Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Jones, with Mr. and Mr. Goheen of Newcastle and Mr. and Mrs. Denzil Dale of Oshawa attend- ed the Gideons' gathering at Wilberforce, Saturday. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Jones went on to visit Mrs. Davis at Eganville. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Boughen spent the weekend at Niagara Falls with their American friends. Newtonville U.C.W. met in the church hall on Wednesday, April 25th at 8 p.m. with Vice President Mary Vinkle presid- ing and opening with the singing of "An Evening Prayer," followed by the Lord's Prayer in unison. The minutes of the last meeting were given by Secretary Jean Kimball, and adopted as read. It was mentioned that five dollars left from the Bus Trip was donated toward the fund for the new choir gowns. After sonie discussion a motion was passed to leave the ne'cessary repairing of the basement to the Board of Stewards, and the U.C.W. will pay the required expenses. The Financial Report showed a satisfactory balance after all bills were paid. The Sunshine Committee reported having sent gifts to the sick and Easter cards to the shut-ins. Those who helped with the Good Friday service are to be thanked. Lunch is to be served after the funeral of Mr. Elmer Green and volun- teers offered the necessary help and supplies for this. Potatoes are to be peeled, for the Saturday night Banquet in Newcastle and several volun- teered to assist with this also. The Brownies have raked up the church lawn, and flower beds and a motion was passed to send a note of appreciation to them and their leader for their services. Janet Paeden offered to get the beds ready for flowers if someone here would help her. It was suggested that two members help to look after this matter for the month of July and two others assist for the month of August, and a motion was passed to arrange this. Several notes of thanks for cards, gifts etc. sent by the Sunshine Committee were read. Ushers and Collection takers were named for our coming Anniversary as well as those willing to help in the choir. First practice of the latter will be held at the church next Wednesday even- ing, May 2 at 8 p.m. Kendal and Shiloh are to be invited to our U.C.W. Anniversary service and plants for the church are to be bought. A motion was passed, authorizing the group for each month to buy the plants required. Envelopes for the Anniversary are here and have to be addressed and envelopes for the Good Friday service, next year are to be ordered. A donation of $25 is to be sent the Bible Society, on motion of Marg. Elliott, seconded by Mary Jones and carried. Marlene Stacey announced that $114 was realized, toward the choir fund, from the "Lucky Lunch- eon" held here, at noon today. The Worship Service was conducted by Marlene Stacey assisted by Helen Elliott and Mary Vinkle. Two Hymns were sung, 'Beneath the Cross of Jesus" and "Safe In the Arms of Jesus" and finally a solo by Marlene, "In the Garden". Following the Ben- ediction lunch was served by the group to the 19 members present. "Happy Birthday" was sung in honor of Violet Gilmer. There was a good attend- ance at noon on April 25 at "Luncheon Is Served" in our church hall, sponsored by the 4M's in aid of the fund for new choir gowns. Mrs. Gwen McGhee the Leader, and her two helpers from Mississauga prepared the meal and the choir group assisted at the tables. Each person attending was asked to sigfl their name on the back of their ticket as draws were made at the close. The funeral of the late Elmer Green was held in the Morris Chapel, Bowmanville on Thursday afternoon, with interment, following in Lake- view Cemetery. The sympathy of the community is expressed to Mrs. Green and family. On Friday at 12 noon the committal service for the late Mrs. Mabelle Rowe Lenshner of Niagara Falls was con- ducted by Rev. Aubrey Tizzard, also at Lakeview Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending met later at the home of her sister, Mrs. Violet Gilmer, for luncheon. There were ten tables in play Friday evening at the card party in our community hall with the following winners - Ladies High - Pearl Clark, Gents High - George Dunlop, 50-50 Draw - Reg Elliott, Draws Ladies - Madeline Buckley, Mabel Elliott, Gents - Wallace Merrill, George Buckley. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fletcher visited their friends Mr. and Mrs. Richard MacCarl in Whitby during the past week. Our U.C.W. catered for the Hockey Club Banquet in Newcastle Community Hall Saturday night when about 230 were served. We under- stand it was quite a successful affair, with plenty of help waiting on the tables (includ- ing some gentlemen) and plenty of food even some left over! Shirley and Glen Stapleton were the Greeters at our church door Sunday morning, when the theme of Rev. Tizzard's sermon was "Another Chance". The baskets of lovely flowers at the Altar were from the funeral of the late Mr. Elmer Green on Thursday and from the Committal of the late Mrs. Mabelle Lenshner on Friday. The choir's anthem was "Only Believe". Next Sunday, May 6 our Worship Service will be con- ducted by the Gideons' Inter- Receives Certificate of Qualification Chairman of the Bowmanville Public Utilities Commission, Mr. William Morrison, left, recently presented Mr. Tom Wright with a certificate qualifying him as a journeyman-lineman with the P.U.C. Mr. Wright was awarded the certificate after four years of vigorous training and various teaching sessions at the electrical utilities training school in Orangeville, Ont. national, with Mr. Denzil Dale the speaker. On Sunday, May 13th the Sacrament of Baptism for any age will be administered at both Newtonville and Kendal. Wed., May 2 - 6:30 p.m. Brownies meet in church hall. Thurs., May 3 - 6:30 p.m. Girl Guides meet in church hall. Miss Carol Henderson was home from Kingston over the weekend and was a guest at the Savery-Murray wedding, Saturday afternoon in Oshawa with Reception later at the Flying Dutchman Motel. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hender- son and Carol were supper guests, Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Peter Henderson and girls in Bowmanville. Local people among the large attendance at the Great Pine Ridge Kinsmen and Kinettes entertainment in Newcastle United Church Hall Sunday afternoon included Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fletcher, Mrs. Leone Lane, Mrs. Bea Jones, Mr. and Mrs. W. Ton, Mrs. Lena Clysdale, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Gilmer, Mrs. Bea Jones, and Mrs. Mary Jones. Plan Marathon The organization for the First Annual Durham Mini Marathon is well under way. The course will be run over roads in the North end of Oshawa as follows. Start at Durham College Sports Complex, through the College grounds to Simcoe Street North, north on Simcoe past Winfields Farms to Columbus (here the 6.65 mile race will return to Durham College) north to Raglan the 9th Concession, west on the 9th to Thornton Road, south on Thornton to the 5th Conces- sion. A short testing hill just before the entrance to Durham College and a long gentle downhill straight finish. The first entries have already been received and hopefully lots of runners and. joggers will be training for the event. Entries have been sent to all of Durham Region, Metro Toronto, Peterborough, Port Hope, Cobourg. Further entries will be distributed at the Ottawa Marathon on 15th May. The Blossom Festival Road Race in Niagara on 12th May and other events in the area. A number of high class Canadian athletes have been approached and further details will follow in future releases.
