4 The Canadian Statesman, Jiowmanville, May 2, 1979 Section Two Tells Her Story to Take-a-Break Group i ailyn N'io«Ww inning The Battie With Booze By Donna Fafrey Alcobolism is like a train. You can get off any time you want or stay on til it's the end of tbe line. .According to Marilyn, a member of Alcobolics Anonymous and guest speaker at St. Jobn's Take-a-Break last.Tuesday, the decision to get off or remain a passenger on tbat train is entirely up to the individual alcoholic. "Tbe very first step on tbe patb to sobriety must be the self admission one is an alcobolic", sbe said. Marilyn is a member of tbe Bowmanville group of A.A.- and has been sober for tbree- and-a-half years. She explained that Alcobolies Anonymous offers a program of attraction, flot promotion. "4I'm now a human being and functioning and I like me again," she said. In comparison to ber belief during ber drinking period tbat -sbe was crazy, she says she's happy to be an admitted alcobolic. Neyer Cured People bave difficulty comprehending the use of the term "alcoholic" wben a person no longer drinks. For tbe sake of understanding, she classes berseif as a "recovering alcoholic." However,- when asked by one of the audience wben' she would cease to be an alcobolic, sbe stated, "when I die." A glance about tbe room prior to the beginning of the meeting gave no indication whicb woman was the recovering alcoholic. Marilyn explained that sbe had been to tbe "pits". and back. Some days reality is stili the "'pits" but she now deals, with it in a different way tbrougb ber association with the A.A. organization. "If at first you don't succeed, falure may be your thing," was Marilyn's motto as she was growing up in a typically average bhome in Toronto. Sbe said she neyer feit she belonged no matter wbere she was. At 18 she married, in ber estimation, for all the wrong reasons and tried to fit berself into a traditionally acceptable mould. Two lovely children and a fine family didn't stop hber from becoming an alcoholic. Altbough Marilyn was able to rbyme off pages of reasons wby she sbould have an alcoholic d rink, the reason was neyer because she was simply thirsty. Any small occasion became an excuse to tip the elbow. Rationalize Problems Alcobolics are clever, cunning people wbo can rationalize thousands of reasons to drink and ways to get it. Marilyn bad a dual g oblem because she also came involved in drugs at tbe samne time. During the years wben tbe ordeal of Marilyn's alcobolism -was at it's peak, her family stayed with her, and later discovered, af ter ber reformation, it was tbe disease tbey hated, not the wife and motber. Finally, one day Marilyn went out for a loaf of bread and neyer came back for six months. She ended up in Winnipeg where, in fact, ber climb back to tbe real world and "eartb people" began. Sbe joined a rebabilitation centre wbicb was not connected with alcobolics anonymous. Altbougb it belped her to a degree at the time, it was only later when she turned to A.A. that she made her final recovery. Medication Helps We, now have medication available which assists tbe alcoholic in the withdrawal from bis babit, sbe said. "I did it cold turkey and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone," Marilyn stated. An alcoholic is a problem drirnker and it's not bow much you drink, but wbat it does to y ou inside, sbe explained. A lief and fai h i God forms a large part of the foundation for tbe success of tbe A.A. program and Marilyn professes, witbout this faitb sbe wouldn't have made it. "I pictured God as a Sunday scbool God with a long white beard and I thougbt I had lost hlm," sbe said. "I found later be was only waiting for me," sbe stated. Restores SeIf-Esteem Alcobolics Anonymous is a day-at-a-time program wbich bas worked successfully for .Marilyn. It bas restored ber self esteem and enabled ber to remain on the wagon this past tbree years. Marilyn told the group sbe is able to maintain an honest job at a botel where she is constantly exposed to "booze". The job is notbing to be proud of," sbe said, "but it's good bonest work." Sbie's b1ýeen wbheire alcohol abuse takes you, and sbe would ratber be bere. The A.A.' organization i sponsoring a series of public community meetings and the first session is being held at tbe Latcbman Centre, Port Perry, Saturday, May 5tb at,, 1:30 p.m. A Judge will be speaking on, tbe courts' opinion of. alcobolism in relation to the' law and a doctor will talk about the medical aspects of alcobolism. Alcobolics Anonymous urges anyone interested ini being informed about alcobolism for any reason to attend. Fitness is fun. Try some. Member of Alcoholies Anonyxnous, Marilyn told St. John's Take-a-Break group last Tuesday how she kicked the alcohol habit and how she has maintained sobriety for three and a haif years through support from the A. A. organization. With her back to the camera, Marilyn discusses alcoholism with a member of the audience. PR OVIN CIAL Judge J. Bark presided with .08.
