Homes and Gardens, Supplement of The Canadian Statesman, April 25, 1979 i Condensation-resistant' windows aren't enough! There's a difference be- tween a mystery and a myth. There's no mystery about condensation and ice on your windows. But if youi've ever looked for an explanation of its causes, you've probably encounteréd a lot of myths .'. . none of which solved the problem. Research report Recent research, comn- pleted by one of the count- try' s foremost manufacturers of window energy conserva- tion produets, identifies the energy efficiency and con- densation resistance of 200 different windows, which in- cludes virtually every exist- ing window type found in American homes. And the study shows a possible condensation and icing situation can exist in as many as 158 of these 200 windows. According to Fred M. Schmidt, Manager of Corpo- rate Communications for Season-alI Industries, who completed this research, -These condensation and icing possibilities can exist in 79% of the window systems we've identified. Condens ation factor "But this doesn't mean that changing to windows or wîndow systems which are condensation resistant will necessarily solve the prob- lem. Even these windows are dependent on the amount of moisture in the air inside the bouse and the difference be- tween the inside and outside temperature." No window is condensa- tion proof, eny more than a wall or a dresser or a drinking glass. Any material will con- dense excessive moisture from heavily laden air if the material is significantly cooler than the air. Two-fold solution So, the solution to conden- sation problemns with Win- dows is two-fold. The first requirement is to bring the inside relative humidity under control. Once this lis done and the problemn stili exists, then the second need is for warmcl- windows. Excessive moisture can be reduced by decreasing the production of moisture into the inside air and by proper ventilation. Some windows can be warmed up by adding storm windows. Others, particu- Iarly drafty, deteriorated windows, may have to be re- placed. Informative bookiet Solving window condensa- tion problems requires being knowledgeable about rela- tive humidity, living habits which generate moisture, proper ventilation and how to identify condensation- resistant windows. Ail of this is discussed in detail, in a new 36-page book, "Windows and Condensa- tion," whîch is available for $2 from Season-all Indus- tries, Department MS-2, In- diana, Pa. 15701. Mr. Schmidt advises any- onetbinking about investing in window improvements,, particularly to remedy a con- densation situation, to first become thoroughly knowl- edgeable about the subject before calling the window man.
