12 nhe Canadian Statesman, Children 's Committee Is Formed Following their highly suc- cessful public meeting with guest speaker Barbara Chisholm, the Newcastle Social Planning Council bas formed a new committee to examine the needs of our community's children from conception to age 18. At its initial meeting on March' l3th, the group decided that its purpose is threefold: 1. To support the child in his-her search for wholeness. 2. To support, facilitate and co-ordinate the efforts of groups now working with children and youth. 3. To identify and respond to unimet needs in the total development of the child within the community. Axnong the problems which were brought forth at the meeting was the difficulty in finding volunteer aduits for Scouting, minor sports, Big Brothers and Sisters, Block Parents etc. Another problem is the cost connected with participation in many youth programs - especially for economically marginal families which hope to provide the same opportunities for their children which other children enjoy. The new committee (which is still deciding on the perfect name for itself) will consist of representatives from organizations which are involved with working with children as well as any individuals who wisb to becomeinvolved or just keep informed. It is hoped that this committee will help existing groups help each other and avoid duplication of efforts. New projects such as pro- grams for Latchkey Kids and parenting courses might also be undertaken. This group will also send a representative to the newly formed Regional Children's Committee. Intersted persons are invit- ed to attend the next meeting to be held at Trinity Cburch Hall, Bowmanville on April 4th at 7:30 p.m. For informa- tion about future meetings, please caîl the Social Planning Council at 623-6646.
