Medical Data Bureau members carry a personalized card containing a microfilmed medical and personal history. The card may be used by a doctor or medical faciity to admit or administer treatment to a patient whether con- scious or unconscious. Owners of the branch in Oshawa, Barbara Hancock, left, and Maureen Murray demonstrate their microfilm reading machine. You Can Carry, Meýcdial RAecords Inside a - WayUlleàct By Donna Fairey Advocates of the Medical Data Bureau, a company whkb provides complete persae and medical identi- fication profiles for its members, say people tend to feel they lead charmed lives as far as an unexpected accident or sudden ilness is ' ncened. Accoding to statistics, 50 percent of ail accidents occur away from home. It's thought- provoking to wonder what could happen to an un- conscious person with special medical problems in a crisis if he carnies no medical information with him. The 'newly-established Medical Data Bureau at 57 Simcoe St. South, Oshawa, is convinced they provide a reliable source of individualiz- ed medical information for its HYME T FARM SUPPLY LTD.. Owners of the franchise operation, Mrs. Maureen Murray and Mrs. Barbara Hancock said, "We feel we really have something here or we wouldn't be in it." Both women come from medically oriented backgrounds. Mrs. Hancock is married to an Ajax doctor and Mrs. Murray is the daughter of a doctor. Medical Data Bureau originated in the United States three years ago. However, in Canada, it is lu its-flrst year-of operation and is a wholly own- ed Canadian company which pays the U:.S. company royalties for use of their namne. Members of Medical Data Bureau are provided with a pesnlized wallet card con- tiiga microfilmed record of their medical and personal history. A duplicate microfilm record is stored in the Medical Data Bureau's Canadian head office in Kitchener, Ontario, and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency cails by way of a toil f ree number printed on each wallet card. The medical information contained in the microfilm chipon each member's card is confidential tanone other than doctors a=-o emergen- cy treatment staff. The microfilmed chip înserted ln the upper right corner of the wailet card is equipped to answer almost any question that a doctor or emergency team could require in order to administer medical treatment. The majority of hospitals have microfilm reading machines whereby, if neces- sary, a patient's card may be inserted and is microfilm chip will display his entire medical history. The micro- film reading machine will ho made available by Medical Data Bureau to any hospital which does not have one. "Medicine has become se sophisticated that the medical field needs ali the pertinent patient information they can get," said Mrs. Hancock. "The Medical Data Bureau's objectives are saving lives and lessening pain and suffer- ing," she said. Mrs. Hancock pointed out that being a card carrying member of the Medical Data Bureau will not prevent an accident or sudden iliness, but it will help save a life. For those people who would feel even more secure wearing a medic alert bracelet or necklace, Medical Data Bureau will supply them for a nominal fee. This is p art of the. Bureau's membership service. There are family member- ship fees for a three year period and each member of the family will be provided with his own personalized medical information card. An individual may join Medical Data Bureau for a three year period for a single fee. As a benefit to senior citizens, any person 60 years or older at the time of joining Medical Data Bureau is entitled to, a lifetime member- ship for the cost of the initial enrolment fee. As an added incentive feature, the bureau wil provde a duplicate micro- filmed membership card to he kept in student's school records, in case a chiid should encounter a medical emnergency on the school premises. The owners of the Oshawa franchise pointed out that membership is not primarily designed for those people with special medical problems. Eighty percent of the bureau's membership is in excellent health. Under normal circum- stances, people can simply forget to mention something in their medical history that could have a bearing on routine treatment, they said. Mothers have also been known to arrive at hospital emnergency too distraught over a sick child to be able to communicate a child's health history. Before medical treatment can be administered to a patient, a medical background must be determined whether or not he has any a6normali- ties ini his medical history. At a recent annual council meeting of the Ontario Medical Association, the concept of portable medical information cards was supported. Both owners feel that a life could literally be hanging in the balance for lack of an available medical profile in an emergency situation. As a member of Medical Data Bureau, a precautionary safe- guard is provided te possibly save a life, they explained. Superb Spring Concert Presented by Ont ario Christian Music by Coby Veenstra "'Praise My Soul The King of Heaven". The majestic chords of this chorus were the beginning of the spring, concert of the Ontario Christ- ian Music Assembly. Under the direction of Leendert Kooy, choirs, orchestra and audience joined in praise to the Creator on the evening of March 31, when the balmy weather of the day held bright promises for Spring. The gospel hymn "We've A Story to Tell to the Nations" was followed by the orchestra's performance of a Waltz by Ivanovichi. The theme of this waltz is very well known as it is often played by barrel organs and caliopes. The children's choir sang several* selections and con- sidering how few children there were, they produced a lot of sound without losing the sweetness of their voices. Deep River, the well-known and loved spiritual was follow- ed by a rousing sing-along "Christ Shahl Have Dominion" and the tender'y moving IlWere You There"' by the orchestra. From Mendel- sohn's Psalm 42, the choirs sang "As the hart pants after the water brooks, so panteth my soul for Thee oh God." From a protestant rebel movement (les geux) during the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands, sprang many beautiful hymns of faith and much loved patriotic songs. Three of these were beautiful- ly woven together by Dutch organist-co mpos er Feike Asma into a fantasy, played by Leendert Kooy. It was almost comical to see the surprised recognition dawning on the faces of the older Dutch people in the audience. Several other numbers were performed. The best received was J.P. Sousa's Thunderer March including some fancy stick-work by drummer Joop Van Noord. The drummers were aided by a considerable hssemb1y amount of foot-tapin' from the audience which is a pretty good yardstick (pardon! metre stick) of audience eyetLeendert Kooy's Cantata No. 8 on the hymn "Humble Praises" was performed with the aria sung by John De Cloe and the clarinet solo expertly Èayed by 16 yr. old Joanna he spontaneous standing ovation was a warm tribute to the O.C.M .A. and the-entire, concert was a loving tribute to God. acte Give Heart FUMd.
