8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, December 27, 1978 B.S.P.S,. Classrooms Get a Touch of Christmas Skin Care To better understand the 'problems involved in cleansing and proper skin care we must first look at the skin itself, this complex organ that covers andi protects the body from invasion. The, skin is a totally fascinating organ. t î not only the largest, but next to the brain, it is the most complex organ of our bodies: t serves as an intermediary bet- ween the body and its environment, perfor- ming many functions. Our skin is continually and very efficiently working for us and most of the time the work goes completely un- noticed. It's hard to believe that this com- plex organ doesn't give us more problems. There are seven basic duties of the skin and each function plays an important part in caring for us, they are: 1. Protection from heat, cold, bacteria and other objects of the environ- ment that we are better off without. 2.' Regulation, controlling the body temperature, it maintains the inside temperature of our bodies regardless of what the temperature is outside. 3. Excretion, it eliminates sweat, sait and wastes. 4. Respiration; to an ex- tent, the skin breathes, exhaling.carbon dioxide and eliminating the other unwanted gases. 5. Hydration, by con- taining water to keep the skin soft, and supple and by discharging per- spiration and the oily, sebaceous material that is the skin's best lubricant. 6, Absorp- Students at the BoWmanville Senior Public School decked the halls and their classrooms too in a fine display of Christmas spirit. A contest Was held to decide Which of, the classrooms were the best-decorated and even the Walls of the Library were festooned With Christmas messages. Students in the loWer picture are shoWn reading under a Wall that bears greetings in several languages. In the upper photos, students in Mr. MeAr- thur's industrial arts class pose beside a Christmas tree made from Wood. Sensation; the, nerve endings just under the outer layer make us aware of heat, cold, pain and pi-easure. Sensation acts with lightning speed to make us react. The skin becomes thick with rough treat- ment and is its own fac- tory for vitamin D When exposed to the ultra violet rays of the sun, t is much the same as hair, for it too is made of protein, moisture and other substances. The structure of the skin is also similar to that of hair, starting Witht amino acids, linked together by peptide bonds Which finally f orm the elastic collagen protein, portion of the skin. The averaget P-H of skin is <s]ightly t acidic - The fatty acids t in sWeat, the aminoc acids and other water soluble materiais, and the carbun dioxide gas ti thbat emanates from the pores, ail combine to give skin an acid mantie to help ward off infec- tion from bac teria. A great majority of skin problems which face you today are due to the repeated use of aikaline products which destroy this acid- man- tie. Once this, is destroyed it leaves the skin unprotected and sensitive to bacteria and the elements. There is a lot more to the skin than meets the eye, 50 visit a professional and get started on a skin care program suited to you. OBITUAùR'y MRS.
