4 The Canadian Statesman, OBI1TUARIES SARAH ISABELLA McALLISTER Active in ail church activi- ties, kind to friends and neighbors, and a devoted wife and mother "Sache" Sarah Isabella McAllister, passed away, following a few hours illness, on Thursday, November 30th, 1978, in Memorial Hospital, Bowman- ville. In her 8th year, she had more or less been confined to her home, the past year. Daughter of George and Rose Burtch, she was born and educated in Orangeville. On May 29th. 1919, she was married to the late Samuel MeAllister. A resident in Bowmanville for 51 years, she had prevîous- ly resided in Brampton, Caledon and Meadowvale. A member of St. Paul's United Church, she had been active in the Sufiday Sehool, the W.M.S., and the U.C.W. in which she held office. Surviving are her daughters Mrs. M. Cawker (Mary), Port Hope. Mrs.' W. Wright (Violet), Agincourt, and five grandchildren. Reverend E. Schamerhorn officiated at the funeral services held on Monday at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home. Paîl-bearers were Messrs- W. Teeple, J. Barton, Robert Elliott, and grandsons Robert Wright, Michael and Murray Cawker. Many donations were- made to the Ontario Heart Fund and St. Paul's United Church Fund in ber memory. Interment Bowmanville Cemetery. MRS.>WILLIAM <WINONA) CLARKÉ Mrs. Winona Clarke of 230 Golf Street, Oshawa and a former well-known and popu- lar resident of Bowmanville, passed away on Thursday, December l4th, 1978 in Osh- awa General Hospital. Mrs. Clarke was born Nov. 6, 1904, in Hamilton, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Roach. A member of St. Gregory's Roman Catholîc Church she, was very prominent in public life in both Bowmanville and Oshawa. She was the first woman elected to the Bowmanville board of education of which she was chairman for two years. She served an unbroken term of 20 years on the Oshawa Separate Sehool Board, being vice-chairman for a term. Instrumental in establishing bilingual schools in Oshawa, in, 1971, in recognition of outstanding service rendered, Mrs. Clarke was presented with the award of menit by the Ontario Separate School Trustees' Association. As well as her school board services, she still made time for many church and com- munity activities. She was a past-president of the Bowman- ville Home and School, St. Gregory's Catholie Women's League and St. Gregory's PTA, secretary-treasurer of the Oshawa Liberal Party, having been a staunch sup- porter of grass-roots partic- ipation in politics. .A tireless champion of the underdog and an outstanding organizer, Mrs. Clarke will be sadly missed by her family and the community.
