And Thanksgiving is coming up next month, and you know you won't be able to resist second helpings of alL the traditional trimmings? And you know if you could start your jogging program that you could consume those Thanksgiving goodies without worrying about your girth? If so, you would be pleased to hear about the Durham College's first annual Turkey Trot, a fun run to be held on October 15 from the College. The run, sponsored by the College's Applied Arts Division in conjunction with the Oshawa City and Legion Track Club and Oshawa This Week, will be open to the general public for a very small entry fee. Entrants will have a choice of two courses for the Turkey Trot: one of five kilometres S(3.1 miles) and one of 10 Kilometres (6.2 miles). Organizers stress that the Turkey Trot is not a race, and rthat the object- is to involve community residents in a fitness activity. 1"The casual jogger who is running one to two miles on a regular basis can quite readily set a realistic target of finishing the 10 kilometre course", says Rick Kerr, director of the course. "On the other hand, anyon e who has been intending to start jogging now bas an ideal target: begin training now and set a goal of finishing- the shorter (5 kilometre) course ', Kerr adds. Ail finishers will be equally eligible for, a draw for a variety of awards and prizes. The entry fee of $1.00 bas been set to encourage participation. Crested Tee shirts will be available at the' Durham- College Athletic Complex before the event or at the start of the race. 1 And although the main object is to provide struggling joggers with a course to aim. at, those who fancy themselves as World-beaters can race against a stop watch. But the most fun W!ill be had -- and the most turkey will be shed -- by those at the back of the pack. Jo.ggers completing the long 10 kilometre course at a pace of 10 minutes a mile would finish in about one hour. Race officiais will be at their posts for up to 90 minutes after the start. And ail finishers - running, jogging, walking or crawling - will receive an officiai certificate- complete with Turkey Trot ensignia. LungsBefore IBirthl One prohlem of very small premature babies. is immature lungs. But new techniques can help tiny lungs develop., Even before these babies are bora. Unlike some organs, lungs must be able to function at the instant of birth. Or the baby will die. To survive the first breath, the baby's lungs must produce a substance called surfactant which coats the millions of air sacs in the lungs. Surfactant gives the lungs the stretching power they need to expand with air. And keeps them from collapsing when the air is exhaled. Without surf actant, lungs cannot function. Tests of the amniotic fluid in the mother's womb can measure how much surfactant the fetus' lungs are producing. If these levels are too low when premature labour begins, emergency mneasures must be taken. 1From extensive research on pregnant sheep and rabbits having low-weight bâbies who are bon prematurely. The mother's smoking blocks off the oxygen supply to thie fetus. Find out more about ahl kinds of lung disease. Contact Durham Regioni Lung Association, your' local Christmas Seal people #àt 723-3151. It's a matter of life and breath. 14J
