Callahan Bermuda News Bureau Feature Writer To the rest of the world, Bermuda shorts are merely cutoff trousers that help dissolve the discomfort of a, sultry day. To Bermudians, though, the popular shorts are much more than jugst a natty wýay of keeping cool. Every isiander bas a vested interest in the image and good name of Betrmuda shorts. After ail, to utter the name of the garment is to proclaim the name of the country; and what better form of free world-wide advertising is there for a wee island nation where chief industry is tourism?1 Bermuda shorts, however, weren't always a popular and reachly accepted part of the island's culture. Due to the semitropical climate, they were introduced to the self- governing British colony by the British army just after the turn of the century as an adaption to the tropical uniform then being worn in warmer climes by the troops of His Majesty, Edward VII, monarch from 1901 to 1910. Described by writers of the day as "baggy in appearance" the original Bermuda shorts along the outseam measured 22 inches from the top of the waist band to the hem wich rested on the top of the knee. Traditionally, the shorts have been worn with kneesocks. Until the 1920's, Bermuda shorts were only seen on Englishmen living on the island, but when merchants in the capital cîty of Hamilton began seocking tbem, the male populace gradually adopted tbemn for spring, summer and early faîl office wear. As the popularity of the shorts increased in the community, the ýestablished institutions balked and the inevitable resistance to change set in. Unwritten laws governing wbere tbey could be worn became common, and it IAnnouncemnenti PERC LEACH Durham Real Estate Lfd., 99 King Sf. Shorts also were considered at the time as improper, dress in church, while wearing them in the Supreme Court or Parliament was strictly taboo. Today, ironically, members of the Legislature are stili prohibited from appearing in shorts on the floors of both bouses while tbey are in session. During the 1930's, restrictions on Bermuda shorts went a bit further when local authorities imposed a preferred-length law, stating that shorts would be two to four inches but neyer more than six inches above the kees. In later years, police officers carried tape measures to ensure the law was obeyed to the fullest. In recent years, fashion designers and trend setters bave l4een able to influence the Bermuda-shorts market and today the accepted length is about 191/2 inches. When Jamaica shorts--traditionally about 17 inches in length and customarily not worn witb kneesocks -- appeared, they gained considerable popularity but their affection neyer rivaled that given to Bermuda shorts. Jamaica shorts gained more popularity among womnen and have developed into a leisure- time or recreational garment. Bermuda shorts, on the other hand, have come to be accepted for leisure, business and formai wear on tbe island. In other parts of the world at various times, Bermuda shorts bave stimulated admiration, prompted fund raisings and stirred vexation. For instance, Bermuda's olympic teamn was attired in tbe traditional shorts when it passed the reviewing stand at tbe 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. The sight so moved the local press that the next day's edition carried a front-page story and photo. Then, there was the time in Provîncetown, Mas- sachusetts, when the local bhigh school held a Bermuda Shorts Day to raise money for new band uniforms. Students were allowed to wear Bermuda Shorts to class provided they contributed 50 cents to the fund. And then there was the time when the visiting manager of a Bermuda hotel was refused admittance to the dining room of a plush hotel in Toronto. The message at the door was curt: "We don't permit Bermuda shorts in our dining room." In protest, the manager of the Bermuda hotel buffily tugged bis kneesocks igher, turned tail and went next door to a restaurant where he dined without further incident. With that kind of zealous support and affection from Bermudians, Bermuda shorts will endure forever. 7We'lll nspect That House'Before You Buy!I 1 will check it for major or minor expenses that you may overlook! verbal Report (2000 sq. ft.> Written Report with estimate s 10)0.00 $ 150.00 (Up f0 a propertY volued at $100,00 Ail estimates given within a radius'of 30 miles.
