December 8, 1976 D&R Sp-,uorts Atoms Dump M"arkham The Bowmanville D&R Sports Minor Atoms continue along on their winning streak as they defeated Markhamon Saturday 4-2. The League- game was played at the Memorial Arena. .Markham opened the game in an impressive fashion, scoring the first goal of the game at the 6:40 mark. J4& M IR ,~299 DEAN AVE. - OSHAWA S576-1220 ________Chargex In the middle period. the Toros' Chris Dreossi evened the count when he scored a goal, assisted by his ight Winger Tom MeLaughlin. Just 23 seconds later, Jon Clieff sent the Toros in the iead when he scored a picture goal, assis ted by his linemate Jeff Dawson and defenceman Pierre St. Amand. In the final period, Mark- ham scored to again deadlock the score. The goal came at the 1:37 mark, Bowmanville's Brent Neill sent the Toros in the lead with a superb scoring effort by the entire line. Assists on the play went to McLaughiin and Dreossi. The insurance mnarker came at the 4:65 mark of the final period and was garnered by Dawson and assisted by Clieff. Alan Ulrich was in the net for the Toros and was very, sharp, particularly in the, opening period when his teammates were a littie shaky. The uine of Watson, Clieff and Dawson were very 'im- pressive in this game, with their passing plays keeping the visitors off balance. The defence corps consisting of Glenn Duncan, St. Amand, Brian Heard and Lorne Whit- marsh were again very im- pressive handing out stiff body checks and setting up the forwards with some crisp passing. On Saturday, Dec. llth, the D&R Sports Minor Atoms will play an exhibition game in Bowmanville at 2:00 p.m. and on Sunday, they travel to Peterborough for an 0. M.H. A. League game in the Kinsmen Arena. Hampton P.. Wees Hampton Gardens Minor Pee Wees lost a league game to Lindsay at Bowmanville arena on Saturday Dec. 4th. Lindsay scored once in each period to win the game 3-0 but this was a well played game. The Hampton Gardens team were in this game ail the way and deserved full credit for their hustle and drive. Lind- say is the best team in the area in this age group, and are at the~ top of'the ~standings. This weekend the Toros play three games in three days, with the home gaine against Whitby on Saturday. When a team loses, the first thought is to blame the referee. This makes a team and their fans sound like a poor loser.- The calibre of refereeing in this gaine would best be descnibed as inexper- ienced and not consistent, the end result taking the play from the participants in this a reiatively cleanly played gaine. Analyzing the two close losses on the PCMR ice to Panthers, of the nine goals scored against Eagles, six have corne fromn their potent power play with Barry Roy counting three. On the other side Eagies power play has produced only two goals., The first period action sawv Rory Gibbs assessed 14 pen- aly minutes removing the hard working centre for most of the first period. Port Hope power play clicked for their only first period goal, Mc- Dougaîl from Sanders and Dunn. Brian Simpson scored the tying goal assisted by Gary Nernisz. Eagles were awarded a penalty shot with AI E m ard losing control of the puck on the curved blade af ter deking -Kevin Tydali in net. Fort Hopes power play click-, ed again, Roy froin Taylor and Freeman for the only second perjod goal. Don Spicher tied the score for Eagles in the third, a long sinker drive assisted by AI Emard. Panter's go ahead goal again a power play, Roy scoring, assisted by Freeman and Dunn. Bowmanville's only power play goal came from Boyd Knox setup by Joe Humenick. Rory Gibb's late go ahead goal was wasniec out, the referee thought Gibbs was in the crease. The game winner came from Panthers captain Brad Davis with only 1.04 lef t in the third assisted by Duno and Freeman af ter loose checking, beating Bob Koczu- lab who played a steady game. Bowmanville Port Darling- ton Marina and Hotel Junior Cs played Sunday, night against Cobourg Cougars in the local deep freeze winning by an 8-2 count with both teams wearing ont the hinges on the penalty box doors also giving the busy timers writ- er's cramp and cold feet for the hockey fans, the game taking aimost three hours to be played with a total of 137 penalty minutes handed ont by AI Dick who wore ont a whistle trying to keep the game under control. The game started out at a fast pace with good crowd pleasing hockey. Cobourg dropped behind by a 3-1 count at this point Cougar Coach Vern McGregor, dean of the Junior C coaches, decided to play a game of' intimidation because he did not have the talent or the bench to defeat Eagies in this game. Unfor- tunately, Eagles without coach Bill Cosburn's disci- pline on the bench, who was on a one game suspension, play- ed into McGregor's hands with Eagles assessed 76 to 61 by Cougars with two locals tossed out of the gaine to Cougars one. Sandwiched between the combina tion of boxing and wrestling ring 'action were some excellent -scoring plays by Eagles. Their, first goal. came early in the first period, Bnian Simpson froin Gary Cox the next from Ted Puk on a nice setup by Brian Simp- son.. Cougars got on the score board and iooked as though they might make a game of it, Stevenson from Witerveen. Ted Puk got the eventual game winner at 19:32 of the first, assisted by Hory Gibbs. The oniy scoring action in the second came fromn Cou- gar's Stevenson from Payne with Lenny Chappeil caught playing deep in the net., Eagles Rory Gibbs scored 41 seconds into the third, Boyd Knox and AI Emard assisting. Gary Cox broke in on his wrong wing beating Ron Fowier. Rory Gibbs counted next Boyd Knox and Gary Nemisz assisted. The picture goal of the game scored by Gary Cox threading' the needie on a backhander setup by AI Emard. Gerry Johnson finish- ed the scoring. assisted by Nick Van Seggelen and Boyd Knox. Hooper Trophy Centre's three stars of -the game were first, AI Emard who came to play for the full 60 minutes with, a superb game; second, Rory Gibbs, third, Cougar's ýMorris Pethrîck. honorable mentions go to Gary Cox, Steve Dunn, Ron Strike.
