4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 18, 1976 New 4H Project Being Offered To Orono, Girls A new 4-H project entitled "Focus on Living" will be offered in Orono if there are enough girls interested. This club deals with mental and physical fitness, creatîve use of leisure time, safety in the home, babysitting, etc. If any girls in the Orono area are interested please contact the leader, Mrs. Lola Kennedy., Main St., Orono, phone 983-5369. ENNISKILLEN" Once again the spotlight plays on us as our Jr. 4-H Hornemakers' Club, knownas the "Chelsea Gals" was cho- sen by the Home Economist, for this area of six surround- ing Counties, to represent Durham County for Junior Day at Peterborough Exhibi- tion which took place in St. John's Elem entary School, Peterborough on Thurs. last week. The mnembers were required to be 14 years old and to have completed at least one of the last three units. Our group's exhibit was titled 'Breakfast Breads" and was commentated by Beverely Stainton. Each of the 6 Counties' Clubs gave a skit, exhibit or demonstration from one of their last 3 units. To observe this mar'Vellous dis- play was an r-ducational feature in itself and lucky was each girl who had the oppor- tunity to attend. The unfavour- able weather conditions cur- tailed adequate tranisportation in a moderate way. For al girls' participating in the day's activities there was a pass to the Ex., $3.00 spending money and supper at the Rock, Haven Restaurant hosted by De Lavai where about 450 young folks of 4-H Clubs were feted. A cheque of $10.00 was given each club as a special appreciation from the Ex. executive. Congratulations gals - keep up the good work. A word of thanks to the dedicat- edleaders and drivers. Our small fry are so fortunate this vacation to have no idle time on their hands due to the fact they can have fun at the school playground in the afternoons (weather per- mitting) under the supervision of our very own expertise. Self praise is no praise at ail but we must toot our horn one more time. Our U.C.W. dis- played their culinary skill at the reception in Centennial Hall, Bowmanville, for the Mahaffey - Smith wedding on Saturday. Our Y.G. gathered at the community Hall last Friday to check two items in their improvement project i.e., (a) the green trim on the paint job (b) beginning of a perennial flôwer border and other pos- sible landscaping which they plan to put into effect on Aug. 25th at 6:30 p.m. In a brief business period the August projects were arranged, i.e. hayride, corn, and wiener roast Friday, Aug. 27th or Saturday in case of ramn, visit to a church of another creed, golf lesson and swim. Poor weekend weather and un- availability of a 'suitable campsite has forced cancella- tion of camping and outdoor church service for the time, at least.i The weatherman predicts a good weather week for the harvesters who are in full action now, also for opening of the C.N.E. One of our local Jersey herds were repres ent- ed at the Peterborough Ex. via Bragg Transport Iast week and are getting "spruced up" Mrs. C.E. Horn attended the funeral of the late Percy Hamilton, Millbrook with in- terment in St. John's Ceme- tery, Blackstock. Mr. and Mrs. -Earl Trewin were recent callers at Mr. and MIrs. Aubrey Cain, Pontypool. Margaret and Orville Ash- ton accompanied Alice and Gordon Beech, Bowmanville for a visit with niece and nephew Beth and Dave Welf don and family at their Trailer. Camp, Bobcaygeon, also en- joyed a cruise on Pidgeon Lake. Music filled the air for a couple of hours at O.C. Ashton's home as he, four of bis sisters and brother prac- tised a choral number with pianist Bonnie Beech- on Sunday morning.
