United Church News On Sunday, June 27th, at Newcastle United Church the choir sang 'O Tender Shep- herd Lead Me'. Rev. Thomas Smith told the story of the composition of the Olympic Symbol, the upper part like an M, for Montreal where the Games are held and like stained-glass windows for the glory of wmning and for the fun of taking part; superim- posed on the large hump of the M is an oval, shaped like the stadium. The five circles at the bottom of the symbol represent the International aspect with the five continents participating in the Games. The flowers in the Church were in memory of Mr. Gordon Laking, whose funeral w.as Saturday afternoon, June 26th. Since this was Rev. Smith's farewell Sunday, he titled his sermon 'The Continuing Battle' and like Jacob we, wrestle with our conscience to always try to do better. During his nine years of service Rev. Smith performed 190 Baptismals, 105 weddings and many funerals of loved ones of the congregation. Before the Benediction, a circle of Friendship was formed round the church while all sang the Chorus of In the Garden. Next Sunday, July 4th, Newcastle, Orono, and Kirby Congregation will worship at Kirby Centennial School at 10 a.m. On Wednesday, June 30th, the Induction Service for Rev. David Spivey will be held at the Church at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Keith Pike, on behalf of Oshawa Presbytery will lead the service with Rev. Charles Haynor, Brooklin United Church, as speaker. It was a very successful picnic. Powell Family Reunion On Sunday afternoon, June 27, the Powell Family Picnic was held at Orono Park with an attendance of seventy. Dana and Marilyn Coulter were in charge of the sports. Winners of the races were: 3 and under, Kevin Coulter; 6 and under Johnny Coulter, 10 and under Lisa Sherman, 13 and under Dale Rudge, over 14, Harley Sherman. David Rudge and Harley Sherman won both the wheelbarrow race and the three-legged race. The Women's Shoe Kick was won by Dale Rudge and the men's by Dana Coulter. The youngest attendant was six-weeks' old Glenn Coulter Beeton and the oldest, Marjor- ie Powell. Bill and Lindî, Couch were the most recent newlyweds in attendance. Stanley and Kathleen Powell were chosen to look after the games for 1977 when it was decided that the Powell Family Reunion would again be held in Orono Park on the fourth Sunday of June. Robin McLaren was winner of the jelly bean contest and we hope the prize will be a lucky one. Many other picnics were also held in Orono Park on Sunday afternoon.
