10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 26, 1976 Section Two Future o evelopment In Bowmanville West SiliRemains A decision on the Bowman- ville West subdivision pro- posal was postponed by the Planning Advisory Committee on Mon., May lOth until after a detailed report on the proposal is released. I. Milani, a developer with the Bowmanville West devel- opment company oft Milani and Milani Holdings, said the report by the consulting engineering firm of Under- wood, McLellan and Associ- ates would be released no later than May 24. Conroy Dowson, Planning Consultant for the Bowman- ville West developers, spoke to the committee about New- castle Town Planner George Howden's review of his re- sponse to a planning depart- ment report on the proposed subdivision. Defending the site proposed for the subdivision, IMr. Dow- son said it would meet the requirements of the various authorities including the Cen- tral Lake Ontario Conserva- tion Authority (CLOCA) and Ontario Hydro. He criticized a comment in the report that stated a subdivision west of Bowman- ville would encourage com- muting and the use of shop- ping, recreation and com- munity service facilities out- side the town. The planning consultant said he could not see how the subdivision would lead to commuting to other urban centres. He was also critical of another statement in the report indicating that the development would encourage the merging of agricultural land toward the Oshawa- Whitby-Courtice urban area in the Official Plan. The proposed subdivision would be nine miles away from the area, he said. Using Toronto as an exam- ple of how long it would take a development to grow, Mr. Dowson said it would be a number of years before the Bowmanville West develop- ment spread as far west as indicated in the report. He aiso questioned the report's conclusion that a development in Bowmanville West would result in a "comnmuter based community oriented primarily to other larger urban places." The goals of the Bowman- ville West development are similar not only to those of the municipality he said, but would also conform to region- al and provincial goals as well. Unclear UVE BY "Eye Hath Not Seen" Rev. D. Bruce Johnson The United Church of Canada "Eye hath not seen nor ear heard neither has it entered into the heart of man what God hath in store for them that love him. I asked a friend the other day if he used a hearing aid. He was surprised and amused and replied that lie didn't. But, of course, lie does. The radio is a hearing aid. Our ears are only capable of picking up the loud sounds of the earth. The subtle sounds elude us altogether. But they are real all the same as in a great reservoir waiting to be tapped. And so it is with sight. Only the grosser things can be seen. But by means of a microscope a whole new world of things is added to the kingdom of things visible. I sat on a hill one day with my dog. All at once lie perked up his ears and looked off into the distance. A moment later I too, heard the train. But the rumble of the train was all around me long before I was conscious of its presence. There is a realm of reality about us all the time that eludes our limited powers of perception. I believe this is also true in respect to our thought life. We are only capable of picking up the unrefined thoughts. But there is a thought domain of rici and subtle dimension that eludes our common mental activity. We may develop the power to break the thought barrier and pass beyond to participate in pure consciousness and absolute being. Prayer and meditation can elevate us into a Power and Presence that our clunsy thought processes leave untouched. "In God I live and move and have my being." But as long as I am absorbed through my senses with the objects of creation I may find it impossible to experience God who is Being itself. Through prayer and meditation I may dissolve the objects that occupy me and experience God who is Being. Francis of Assisi left his friends one evening and prayed all night. The only words lie uttered in his prayer were "My God, My God", all night long lie, repeated these words. The earthly objects of sense experienced were dissolved and lie experienced God who is Being itself. "Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10 Awareness of God is a state of pure consciousness. This state can readily be realized if we allow our attention to be distracted from earthly objects by a repetition of the name of God, Written for this newspaper by- the Reverend D.
