The Canadian Statesman, BowmanvileApi1497 9 ,«e Constitution È,,Ins£urance ,ýMinîor'Midgets Win Ontarjo Titi Following the hockey game here on Saturday night in which the Bowmanville Constitution Insurance Minor Midgets defeated Stoneybrook to win the Ontario Championship, several trophies and crests were presented. District Convenor Wally Biernacki of Bay Ridges, left, presented the AI Moore trophy to the winning Captain Brad Godfrey, and OMHA Executive Member Ed Grimshaw of Stouffville presented the Runner-up Tony Bloomfield trophy to Capt. Rick Stinchcombe of Stoneybrook. Each member of both teams received a special crest. On Saturday evening in Bowmanville Arena, the Con- stitution Insurance Minor Midgets defeated Stoneybrook 7-3 to win the Ontario Champ- ionship. The Toros got their first goal when Brad Godfrey scored Bernie Heming of the Tyrone Athletic Association advised the Statesman Mon- day evening that the commun- ity is organizing a Junior Soccer Team for those ages 7 to 10. Mr. Heming explained that they wish to avoid becoming part of the Town of Newcastle Recreation League but would prefer to play in a league with teams from other Darlington Township communities, sim- ilar to the existing senior league. The Senior team in Tyrone is providing the coaching for the Juniors and he is hopeful that a similar arrangement will follow with the other six after he received a pass from right winger Ed Visser. Gary Dusseldorp also assisted on the play. Bowmanville scored the second goal at the 6:49 mark when Gary Dusseldorp stickhandled around the Stoneybrook defense and shot senior teams from Solina, Hampton, Zion, Salem, Orono and Courtice. The Senior league schedule for this year is apparently scheduled to start around May 12 and Mr. Heming would appreciate hearing from any of the communities interested in the Junior league. He anticipates that they would follow their own league schedule and finish the season with a match between the best team against the best from Bowmanville. Logically, Mr. Heming sees the formation of the Junior league as an ideal means of training the boys to fill the future ranks of the senior teams. Two minutes later Scott Stevens scored to give the Toros a 3-0 lead. Brad Godfrey assisted on the goal. At this point Stoneybrook scored their first goal of three. The second period saw some excellent hockey being dis- played by both teams. Six minutes into the second per- iod, Brad Godfrey scored after a scramble in front of the Stoneybrook net. Linemates Ed Visser and Gary Dussel- dorp assisted the play as they both worked hard in front of the net. One minute later, Dan Strike scored after Dean Rutherford gave him the puck. Scott Stevens scored another goal which just about put Stoneybrook's hopes of winning beyond reality. Dean Rutherford and Dan Strike assisted on the goal. The third period saw Dan Strike score Bowmanville's final goal after receiving a pass from Dean Rutherford. Brad Godfrey also assisted. The rest of the period saw Stoneybrook score two more goals and saw the Minor Midgets win the All-Ontario Championship. Britt Murphy and Russ Gordon played fantastic to lead the team to victory. The team would like to thank the spectators for their excellent support. Youth Bowling TYKES Smith 5, Cath Connelly 0; Sodhi 3, Lugtenburg 2; Wes- selius 21, Carolyn Connelly 21; Hancock 3, Murray 2.
