4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 28. 1976 Recreat ion Storage to Stay in Miii t was decided at Newcastle Town Council Jan. 19 that the storage and worksbop area for the recreation department will, for the present time, remain in t he od miii. It had been proposed at the Jan. 12 meeting of the Committee of the Whole that the recreation deépart- ment, in order to alI ow sufficient room for tbe Visual Arts program and put a stop to a confliit between the two groups, move to the former J. Mar building on King Street East. 1Mayor Riekard had indi- cated conversation be had with the present owner of the building that be wouid make it available with only beating and electrical costs involved until about the middle of Marcb. However, further investiga- tion since then revealed that a cost of somne $300 rent would be involved. Aiso it has been discovered that the Visuai Arts people are in no hurry at present f or the extra space and so council agreed with the request of Récreation Director Bud Fan- ning that they will stay put for now and seek other accom- modation in the spring. StP!hts Due to the PIict that the traffic situation on Highway 2 in the area of the Oshawa-Dar- iington Town Line Road, particularly at certain times of the day, has become extremiely busy, Coun. Ann Cowman c. uestioned on Jan. 19 if stop hights migbt not be installed at the intersection. Coun. Cowman received assurance from Mayor Garnet Rickard-that the location is one being considered at pre- sent by the Regional Works Department for stop ligbts. 1Recreation Site Coun. Ann Cowman repea- ted ber inquiry of Jan. '19 about the former intention of counicil to attempt to obtain the land on the northwest cor- ner of Martin Road and Hwy. 2 (west of Bowmanville), as a ý osibie future site for a ecreation Complex for Bow- manvilie. She recalled that a report on the possibility of obtaining the land and thé price of it was to be acquired, by Mayor Rickard. 11 Heé responded by advising that be has talked witb the parties concerned and would be wiliing to report on the price he had been quoted at an "In camnera"ý commnittee meeting. Petition A petition signed by 66 t axpayers, protesting the 'backyard development" north of the CPR rail line in Bowmanville was received by council Jan. 19 and referredý to the Planning Advisory Co~mitee for a report. 'e petition protests the approval given by the Com- mittee and subsequently by council of the proposai by Cean Investments. The proposai would provide a variety of housing in the area immediately nortb of. the CPR rail uine, between High Street and Liberty Street and bounded on the north by Third Street. Those who signed the peti- tion apparently are concerned about the safety of children who would be living in the homes, because of the close proximîty of the rail uînes. Assistant Planner Norma Forrest explained that they have been invited to study the plans which they are protest- ing, but have failed to do so. She also advised that the plans cal for a six foot bigh chain ink fence to be erected between the bouses and the rail uine, which, since there is no fence there at present, departments wich admini- ster education in Durham. The public will also have an opportunity to question the oicialsaout education. This course is the second phase of'a public information course whicb the Board has offered to'the public free of charge. The first was on Regionai Government. K. D. Muflroe, the Board's Director of Education, said that bie hopes the public will take advantage of this oppor- tunity to learn how the Board of E ducation operates; to resolve those questions whicb the public apparently bas about education in the '70s and to find out wbat 1976 bas in store for students and tbeir parents.
