Construction costs for the centre, sponsored by the Belleville Yardmen Benefit Fund Inc., will be covered through a monthly- lottery. Once completed, the centre will receive a monthly $50,000 subsidy from the lottery to cc-:er any operating deficit. The first stage, to include two ice arenas, is expected to be com- plete within 1½ years, according to Yardmen publicity manager, Alderman Arthur Keegan. He said the fund had $1.5-million to begin the first stage which is expected to cost $2-million. The second stage will be constructed "as money comes in" and will include an Olympic- size pool. He said the organization hopes the centre will be available in 1976 as a training facility for athletes competing in the Montreal Olympic Games. The Yardmen organization, comprised mainly of Canadian National Rail- ways employees, was formed about four years ago to raise funds for community works. "In the last four years, we have spent more than $3- million in Belleville and area work." said Keegan. TRAVELCADE - Minister of Community and Social Services, Rene Brunelle, has announced Ontario's first Sports Travelcade program, to be launched next spring. Under the Ministry's Sports and Recreation Bureau, the program will enable community sports leaders to increase their skills in coaching, training, management and administra- tion. This in turn should upgrade the quality of instruction available to young athletes and improve both their performances and enjoyment of their chosen sports. The 45-foot travelcade van will ravel ýsmall communities throughout the province, equipped with projectors, slides, films, tapes, micro-film scanners and printers and a full collection of reference material on facilities, instruction and all aspects of sport. HAT TRICK - Although he slept in and missed his flight, Tom Simpson of the Toronto Toros, hopped another plane, arriving in time for the game, scoring three goals and an assist in Detroit against the Michigan Stags, a feat which should soften Coach Billy Harris' decision regarding a fine for slee ing in. The puck slid past into the net but was called back because the referee had already stopped the play. Nearer the boards, Dave Tabb is being held out of play by the second Panthers defenceman. It would have been Wood's third goal of the night, as the Red Eagles ran up a 7-2 win. -Photo by Rick James Red Eagles Score Six in Third Come Up with Tie in There is one thing that makes junior hockey so excit- ing. That is the fast pace. But because of this, you usually can't afford to sit on a lead, no matter how large it seems, nor can you take stupid penalties at the wrong time; not that there is a right time. And you can't afford thi, kind of thing most of all, whe, you are fighting for your life at the bottom of the league. That is something that the Panthers .Iearned Thursday, it is hoped, as they blew a win and came up with a tie. All this occured in the third when Bowmanville scored six big ones to draw 9-9. Two of the six came with Watts and Brereton in the jug. Had the game been only the third period, the Panthers looked pretty much in old form. Bowmanville outscored them 6-2. A winning team has to know more than how to take a lead. They have to know how to hang onto it. Many of the Panthers, such as Rowe Pemberton, and Davis know this very well, but there are a few who don't. Port Hope grabbed the leac right off the start with Dean Morgan, converting a play from Mike David. Tivy started it all. 'ihe Eagle's Co then tied it afw xminutes later, early in the period. Rowe got two in the frame to once again grab the lead. The first came at just past the six minute mark from Davis and Brere- ton, and the other near the end of the opener from Davis and Pemberton. They finished off the opener, with a 4-2 advan- tage as Pemberton and Rowe then got the ball rolling and Davis potted the number four tally. Port Hope added three more in the second compared to the Bowmanville one. Brad Davis' got it at only nineteen seconds. Again, Rowe had the assist. Tabb scored the only Bow- manville marker of the frame Port Hope on a solo effort just past the four minute mark. Dean Morgan notched his second of the night to make it 6-3 Port Hope. Dan Dunn picked up the assist. Finishing it off for the Panthers was Jan Bissett, who potted tl;e number seven goal with thehelp of Brereton and Wayne Griffiths. It was 7-3 and should have stayed that way or gotten even worse for the sagging Eagles. Bowmanville stored at the five, six and seven minute marks to bring it to a close 7-6. Davis added to the Port Hope lead'with his hat trick marker. It was 8-6. Rowe and Morgan assisted. Watts closed the scoring out for the Panthers with a 9-6 lead. Brereton and Watts then retired to the jug while Gibbs and Tabb made it 9-8. That was the hat trick for Tabb as well in the last two seconds of the game, Gibbs made it 9-9. -Port Hope Guide "Duke" Brunt Stars for Midgets Scoring Three with Two Assists As They Down Bay Ridges 8-3 Gerald "Duke" Brunt led the Sports Major Midgets as they downed Bay Ridges by a score of 8-3 in a league game played at Bowmanville on Sat. Dec. 14. Brunt scored three goals & set up two others for his best out ut of the season. Bay Ridges played well despite having just 10 players. They were handicapped further in the third when the goalie was invoIve'd in a fight with a Bowmanville player and both were ejected from the game. Bay Ridges did not have a back-up goalie and were forced to convert one of their other layers to guard the net. He di well considering lack of experience as he only allowed one goal during the remaining fourteen minutes. Bowmanville's other five goals were scored by John Conboy, Ted Puk, Rick Scott, Jim Hutton, and John Cornish. Besides Brunt's two assists, Terry Sarginson had three, Ralph Cryderman, Dan Cox, John Hogarth, Bret Mc- Namee, Mark La Vigne, Ted Puk, Nick Van Seggelen, and Jim Hutton had one each. On Thursday, Dec. 12th. Bowmanville travelled to Stouffville for an exhibition game. This was no contest as Bowmanville shutout the home team by a 7-0 score. Puk and Conboy? scored two each with singles going to Scott, Cornish and Sarginson. Van Seggelen, and Sarginson had a pair of assists and singles were credited to La Vigne, Hutton, Cryderman, Kemp and Brunt. Ted Trudeau and Dan Wil- cox shared in the shutout.
