14 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, TYROKE: Church News Our Advent services have been characterized by good attendance, good messages and good music. On Dec. 8, along with the white gifts, the Explorer girls presented a gif t of money they had earned selling calendars. Last Sun- day the Tyros gave their gif t during a white gif t service in which choir members took part. The fulli choir has been working hard on music for the Christmas services. As well as the regular- service on Christ- mias Sunday, there will be a joint Christm;as Eve service in Tyrone at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday Sehool present- ed their annual Christmas Joy Service on Sunday evening. The church was beaufifully decoratedt with candies, post- ers, wreaths, and boughs, al arranged under the guidance of Arlene Rowan. Narrated b y Dawn and Ellen Vaneyk, the old familiar story and a modern version unfolded before our eyes. Each class portrayed a dîffer- enit part of the story, from the small kindergarten angels through f0 the meaning of the celebration by the seniors. A special part of the service every year is the lovely Christmas music provided by Doug Dewell at the piano., Everyone enjoyed the carol singing and the fellowship hour which followed the ser- vice. Tyrone U.C.W. The Christmas meeting of the U.C.W. is fraditionally the higli point of the year. The committee in charge always seems, f0 live up to this expectation,' and this year was no excepton. The observa- tions of this meeting are humbly submiffcd in an effort f0 convey the beaufy and inspiration of the meeting, which was hield, in Tyrone Church sanctuary. A Warin glow flickered from the chubby Christmas candles f0 the holly-draped tapers and spread over the rosy poinset- fias f0 refleet on the gathering crowd of friends comfortably greeting friends, and welcom- ing visitors f0 the U.C.W. Fresh and new, the powerful simple Christmas story from St. Luke Chapter 2, washed over us, beautifully spoken by Mrs. Helen Glaspell. Accompany,ý- ing herself at the orpn, Elinor Brent sang the famliar words "0 Littfle Town of Bethlehem", to an interesting- ly contralto lune. Mrs. EffÏa Stainton read "My Gifts f0 You", a refreshing nature poem. Followingthe offering Mrs. Effa Stainton lead in a most fouchîn 'g offeýrtory pray- er Ws. Çr Sothwlread a stoïyry by W..Hlendrîx,"n Remembrance of Me". It told of a Chrisfmas celebrated by soldiers in a travelling box- car, by their impromtu wor- Ship service and improvised communion, per formed fhrough scraps of memory. Mrs. Helen Glaspell described the five points of the Christ- mas stai in a Short reading, as Hîumility, Joy, Peace, 'Gui- dan ce and Love. These points were skillfully woven into the benediction. Well, chosen Christmas carols were ap- propriately interspersed throughout the devotional, of course, enabling vocal corp- orafe worship by each and everyone. Mrs. Laverne Tay- lor made a presenfation of Life Membership in~ the United Churëh Women, t0 Mrs. Edna Wood, on behalf of fiellow members, neîghbours and friends, in recognition of Edna's faifhful use of bier abilities. Mrs. Audrey Mavin fastened the significant pin on bier mother's lapel. Edna fittingly replied. Presîdent Jane Woodley opened the business meeting with poetry and prayer. The minutes were read and ap- roved,, followed by the frea- ery, pe le and animais, were enjoye , with Mr. Allin's commenfary, Mrs. Arlene Rowan fhanked Mr. and Mrs. Alin for an entertaining and informative evening.
