Warden Weston Banie- ter~ wtth hie customary combination of wry wit and woridiy wisdom acted as Chief Mortician for the demise of United Counties. Assisting himn as head ta- ble gueste, were M.P. Allan and Mrs. Lawrence, M.P.P. Durham County Alex Car- ruthers and Mrs. Carruth- ers, Mrs. Russell Rowe (grass widow 0of M.P.P. Russell Rowe who was de- tained in Toronto wlth an Educationai prablem), and Cierk-Treasurer Ken Sy- mons and Mrs. Symans. Warden Banîster briefiy traced the history of Unit- ed Counties from its birth ln 1850 ta Its untlmely end in 1973. Reg. McCann and Earl Walkey, former Wardens, spoke on behaif of the for- mer Wardens Association representing both Count- tles. Last Officiai MeetIng On Thursday, Dec. l3th, the last officiai meeting of the UnIted Counties Coun- cil of Northumberland and Durham Was held. After the conclusion of necessary business, a num- ber of members spoke briefly on what the Unit- ed Counties had meant to themn and expressed their good wishes to fellow members as they head in various directions - the new County of Northum- berland. the new Region of Durham, additions to Peterborough and Victoria Counties. Appreciation was ex- pir(-ssed to Warden Banis- ter for the consclentious manner in which he had conducted Couinty busi- ness durîng bis term of Office , As we recognize the ter- mination of -one era, we must perforce face the challenge of a new one. If we are to derive the great- est potential in our new forms of municipal -gov- ernment, we must accept change as a necessary part of growth and ralse our eyes to new horizons. SALEM Our U.C.W. unit met at the church Tuesday Der. lOth. .Mrs. Bob Craig op- ened the meeting with a hymn fallowed by the Lord's prayer. Minutes of last meeting were read, aiea a thank you note Mrs. Sam Buttery reported that the receipts from our bazaar were $285. It was detided to give a donation to the Scott Mission and to remember our sick and 'shut-ins for Christmas. Our programn opened with a cali to worship by Mrs. Doug. Reynolds. Mrs. Alan Stephen read "The Christmas Story". This was interspersed wýith the singlng of Christmas car- oie and Bible readings by Mrs. Matthew- Marchant and Mrs. Wilbert Craig.
