First of Many Goals Scored During Ecgles-Panthers Game Port Hope Panthers' goalie made a valiant effort to save this goal by Bowmaànville Eagles in the first period on Sunday night without success as Woods and Gibbs combined to outfox him and his team-ma tes. It was the first of many scored during the game, with the Eagles coming back from almost certain defeat in the third to outscore the visitors 8-7. Third Period Explosion GDives Eaugles 8-7 Win, Over Pantherls by David Passant Coach George (.awker sum- med up his Bowmanville Jr. C Red Eagle hockey clubs performance Sunday evening very well "For the first 12 minutes we were flying, but fell asleep the last part of the lst. period and ail of the second. In the 3rd., we woke tip again'" And wake up they did. Trailing the visiting Port Hope Panthers after two periods, 7-2, the Eagles rifled horne six unanswered goals in the 3rd. stanza for a thrilling 8-7 comeback victory. There were a number of factors which contributed to thefinal outcome. In the first period, the Red Eagles outshot Port Hope 14-3, but due to amazing saves made by Jeff Gilmer in goal for the Panth- ers, just one goal apiece was counted after 20 minutes. Gilmer was again sparkling in the second period, allowing another goal. His team mates, meanwhile, found the target six tirnes on Bowmanville net minder Randy Thiele. llow- ever, the =e Eagles owned the third period. A f ive minute butt-ending infraction at 2:12 was a- most constly penalty to Mark Van Dam. During bis, cooline out, the Eagles scored three ýtirnes to pull within a goal af the Panthers. In the final' four minutes, after Bowmanville took the lead, Randy Theile was outstanding in net, as he blanked the visitors in the final period. It was 1-1 after one, 7-2 for Port Hope after two periods, with the Eagles outscoring the Panthiers 6-0 in the final 20 minutes. Rory Gibbs' twçù goals plus an assist and Doug Wood, one goal and three assists, were the top point getters for Bowmanville. Oth- er local marksmen were Steve Davey, Bruce Osborne one goal, one assist, Ted Puk, one goal, two assists, Doug Tamblyn, and Pearce Wilcox with the winning marker at 1: 03 of the third, plus a couple of assists. Bill Wagar and Paul Forsey, played strong two- way games, collected the assists on Doug Tamiblyn goal to tie the game at 7-7. Phîl Watts had'a bat trick for the visitors. Gary Rowe had a pair, with singles going to Dean Morgan and Ted Bryan. Eagle Extras:Victory was especially sweet for Eagle Coach George Cawker, since he formerly was a coach with the Port Hope team. Whatever he told the Red Eagles during thic 2nd intermnission fired uip the locals in the finale. If the Eaigles play like they did in the 3rd. perio d Sunday, they'll make it bot for other clubs battling for playoff positions. M&idgets PIay Three Games, In Just Three Days, Winning OnIy One with Port, Hope, Bowrnanville McGregor Midgets came up with only one victory in three weekend games, as Friday in Port Hope after a quick start they won 6-1, but lost 4-2 to Cobourg at home on Saturday and were edged 2-1 in Lindsay Sunday night. In the Port Hope game, Gary Cox scored at the 10 second mark, assisted by Danny Cox. Ralph Cryderman scored twice, the first at 13.15 from Jim Hutton, and the second at, 18.21 from John Wood, to give the McGregor Midgets a 3-0 lead after one period. Port Hope scored the only goal of the second, and their only one of the game, on a bard shot by Mike Groh with John Vanderwerf assisting. In the third period, Bow- manville scored three times for their 6-1 win. Tom Nowlan scored on an end to end rush at 7.12 assisted by John Cornîsh, and then Cornish duplicated Nowlan's feat with an unass- isted goal at 14.12. Gary Nemisz got the final goal at 17.00 with assists to Hutton and Nowlan. Bob Strike and Ted Trudeau split the goal tending, chores and had an easy night with less than ten shots on goal. The McGregor Midgets had seven minors and a miscon- duct, while Port Hope picked up fixe minors. Lose to Cobourg Saturday night at home to Cobourg, Bowmanville fell behind 2-0 after one period, tied the score with two iný the second but fell behind again in the third as Cobourg scored twice more for their 4-2 win. Dwight Beer and Don Day- idson counted for Cobourg in the first while Ken Stevenson and Danny Thompson scored in the third. For the McGregor Midgets, Gary Cox banged one in from a scramble at 8.52 assisted by Tom Nowlan, and Brian Martin scored on Rick Scott's rebound at 11.57 for their only goals. Ted Trudeau started in goal for Bowmanville, but retired at the end of the first period for repairs, with Bob Stnike taking over. The game was the roughest of the season and twice Cobourg players threw off their gloves and started throwing punches. The rougb play resul ted in nine minors and a major to the McGregor Midgets, while the visitors received six minors, two majors and two misconducts. Close Gamne in Lindsay The garne in Lindsay was a close affair from start to finish, with both teams having numerous chances to score, but failing to do so most of the time. Lindsay scored first at 14.44 of the first period with a goal by Murray Ray. With ju.st one second remaining in the period, Ralph Cryderman counted for Bowmanville frorn Nick Van Seggelen for their only goal of the game. After a scoreless second period, Jim Coombes scored the winning goal for Lindsay at 11.10 of the third. With approximately one minute remaining in the game, goal- keeper Bob Strike left the 'ice for an extra attacker, and althougb the McGregor Mid- gets came close to scoring the game ended 2-1 in favor of Lindsay. In 'contrast to the rough gamre the night before, there were only seven minors with Lindsay having six and Bow- manville only one. The Mc- Gregor Midgets record is now six wins and four losses in league play. Eagles Earn 3-3 Draw In Lindsay on Fridauy -By David Passant The Bowmanville Red Eag- les Hockey Club 'played thier best game of the season" said Coach George Cawker, follow- in a 3-3 standoff in Lindsay on Friday, Nov. 3th. The Musk- ies defeated the Eagles in tht'ee previous encounters this season by wide margins, but the Bowmanville squad came up> with a sound performance on the road. Rory Gibbs opened the scQring at 2.47 of the opening periud, a power play goal, with one second left in Jim Hqrnphrey's high-stickingi penalty. Bruce Osborne drew thé assist. Lindsay tied it up at 6:14. Gary Oliver from Bill Abercrombie, and Vaughn Wîright. Steve Doyle made it 2 1e in favor of the Muskies at 15.4ý8, with Kevin Grahamn and Jim Humphrey assisting. The only marker of the second peniod came off the stick of Paul Forsey, with Captain Bruce Osborne notch- ing is second assist of the contest. The Muskies took the lead at 12:'59 of the final stanza witb an unassisted efford by Steve Richardson. But just 14 sec- onds later, at 13:13, Bil Wagar got the equalizer from Paul Forsey an dDoug Tamn- blyn. ,' Lindsay outshot the, Red Ea gles 26 to 24. Bowmanville had eight shots in each period, while the Muskies had six in [lhe first two, and Randy rhiele handled 14 shots for Bowrnanville in the last 20 .minutes. The contest saw only four minors assessed, with Lindsay iaving three of tbern. The Eagles deserve a good deal of ,redit for playing s0 well on he road against such strong )pposition.
