continued from p.5 Treliving stated what he sees in business today is "you're a lot more solid, you've done your homework, you've gone into it and you've looked at different things," which is what he and the Dragons see on Dragons' Den, which itself is growing. "We kept getting bigger and bigger. The first show we had was (viewed by) 250,000 people across the country, which is not very much. Today, we draw (more than) a million (viewers) on every show," said Treliving. The biggest mistake businesses make while pitching an idea to Treliving, he said, is a lack of thought and preparation. "Is it an idea, and if it is, is it better than another idea? Is it a business? Have you done your homework? Are you passionate about it? Do you know what you're going to do (to be successful)? Have you sold anything yet?" Treliving asked. When pitching somebody your idea, he said "don't just pitch it to people you know, pitch it to people you don't know" and include your sales figures to show where you're going to take the business. Treliving said when he looks to invest in a business, "what I look at Passion is a foundation for small business success more than anything else" in a potential partner is passion. "Whether you're really into this business or are they just giving it another shot to see what happens and if doesn't, I will walk away? I can usually pick that up," he said. "You have to look at it and say to yourself, `Why is this person doing this and are they really getting into it?'" Asked when a business should fold if it's been struggling for years, Treliving said it's a tough question to answer, but "we get to that point" if there are no customers or sales. "I could have thrown in the towel in the first five years, probably five times a week. You're asking, `What am I doing this for?'" said Treliving. "We, as Canadians, hate to get beat at anything, so we keep pounding along. It usually takes a long time to turn us, but I think that's good. The Oakville Chamber Business Week for more I don't believe that's wrong. has celebrated Small than 20 years. That's what makes us who we are."
