www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 24, 2014 | 8 Canada not immune to violence, officials remain vigilant continued from p.1 "Canada is not immune to the type of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world," Harper told the nation in a televised address Wednesday night. The Prime Minister's Office said earlier in the week that Couture-Rouleau had been "radicalized." The RCMP later confirmed his passport had also been revoked. The gunman in the Ottawa shooting, 32-yearold Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, had recently converted to Islam according to several reports. After shooting Cirillo, Zehaf-Bibeau made his way from the War Memorial to Parliament's Hall of Honour where he engaged security guards and law enforcement in a gun battle. "The guards did exactly what they should have done, but I'm told the terrorist had on a bulletproof vest," Young said, explaining he was told it took multiple shots before Zehaf-Bibeau fell to the ground near Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers' office. "The sergeant-at-arms... is a real hero, he had to get up close and shoot him in the head and that put an end to it," said Young. The MP said he was in lockdown until 5 p.m. while police meticulously combed the grounds. Young said the latest events solidify the need to increase security, especially on the Hill. "This is the closest you can get to a blood bath without there being one," he said. "This was very, very real and I hope people Terence Young realize now this is here in Canada -- this is a homegrown terrorist." Now, in a week where two Canadian soldiers have fallen victim to separate, but targeted, attacks, Halton police and the local Canadian Forces regiment remain vigilant of possible threats. Halton police held a news conference on Wednesday afternoon telling local residents there was no imminent threat facing the community. Still, police confirmed to the Oakville Beaver on Thursday they had increased local measures in the wake of the violence. "There are a number of areas and strategic areas within Oakville that we deployed staff to, and necessarily directed them there not to have a presence but to be more aware," said Staff Sgt. Craig Platt. "What we are is just more mindful and reaching out more to community members and making sure that we're communicating well with them for any concerns," he said. In the background, Halton police's intelligence bureau officers are "as involved as they've ever been" in monitoring any potential threats. Meanwhile, Vice-chair of the Halton Interfaith Council Abdul Qayyum Mufti said police had increased their presence around three mosques in Oakville as a precaution in the event of misguided retaliations. "People get very concerned for any ramifications," Mufti said. The Interfaith Council was formed after the Sept. 11 terror attacks and continues to be an inclusive voice, meeting regularly to discuss community and broader concerns. Mufti said he's never heard of local concerns about someone being radicalized but that education remains an important pillar for protecting youths. "We are very concerned about our own children," Mufti said. "You can't always look for your Iman to be there it's also the parents who have to educate their own children at home." Flags at local government buildings, fire stations, schools, Royal Canadian Legion buildings and parks all flew at half-mast Thursday.
