Unbeatable style and quality with Kia Sedona By Rob Beintema S P E C IA L T O T H E B E A V E R Choosing a new minivan didn't get any easier when Kia introduced the brand new Sedona to North America. The Sedona - fifth model in Kia's rapidly expanding lineup - offers surprising performance, class-leading standard features, a five-star crash pro tection rating and an excellent warranty package, all at a typically low Kia value price. A few years ago, I was in Korea for the launch of a different car. During a brief escape from the struc tured itinerary of plant tours and PR foofarrah, I man aged to climb through some of Kia's domestic prod ucts, including a predecessor of the minivan (known as the "Carnival" in Korea) that I knew was destined for the Canadian market. The first thing that struck me at the time was how much this minivan was like every other North American minivan. Okay, that particular Carnival featured a few oddball eccentricities that haven't crossed the ocean yet, including a hood scoop and turbo diesel engine combo that we're apparently not quite ready for. And the weird-at-the-time shift lever sticking out of the centre module, reminiscent of the Lexus RX 300 and recently more widely adopted by new vehicles like the Honda SiR. Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe, to mention a few.Kia's Sedona design ers had obviously picked up on the lesson that other manufacturers have learned the hard way - think dustbuster Lumina, lackluster early MPVs, the weird eggshaped Previa and the smallish first generation Honda Odyssey. That is - don't mess Chrysler's original formula for success. It works. In almost every major aspect of style and design, the Kia Sedona has been obviously benchmarked on proven competitors like the Dodge Caravan and Ford Windstar. But, coming late to the party so you can find out what everyone else is wearing, won't exactly make you a trendsetter. Although the Sedona lists many of the features historically available in popular domestic minivans, Kia has yet to catch up to some of the more recent minivan innovations. For example, you won't find optional side airbags, rear entertainment systems, power sliding doors or Chrysler's most recent innova tion - the power tailgate - on any Sedona. What you will find is a surprising level of per formance, refinement, comfort and user-friendly pas senger and cargo utility. "We expect the Sedona to be a success with fami lies because it offers and unbeatable combination of features, style and quality at a lower cost than con sumers expect," said Mike Parenteau, Kia's National Operations and marketing Manager. "In Sedona, we have brought the successful Kia formula of extra The Kia Sedona - fifth product in a rapidly expanding Kia lineup, featuring new levels of warranty and crash safety protection at the lowest m inivan price in Canada. value to the minivan segment." The front-wheel drive Sedona sits in the top half of the pack when it comes to size. It's bigger than Mazda MPV and even Chevy Venture but not as large as a long wheelbase Chrysler Grand Caravan or Ford Windstar. I'd liken its size as most comparable to the Nissan Quest. The Sedona seems to be put together fairly well. There's been a definite uptick in Korean product qual ity lately. Fit and finish, texture, quality of materials, all the aspects of exterior and interior build and styling, are up to snuff with competitors. Yes, the Sedona seems solidly built. Hmm, maybe a little too solidly. The Sedona might not exactly qualify as Weightwatcher's poster van, weighing in heavier than most, tipping the scales with significantly more heft than even Chrysler's fully-loaded flagship, the top-ofthe line Chrysler Town & Country. On the plus side, maybe that solid build accounts for the Sedona's excellent crash test ratings (see page B3). The Sedona harnesses a high-tech 3.5 L DOHC V6 that makes 195 hp @ 5500 rpm and 218 lb-ft of peak torque. Kia boasts this engine as one of the strongest motors in any minivan lineup and it had bet ter be, to move that extra poundage. This is a very nice powerplant. It pulls the Sedona up to speed quickly and without fuss. But again, the extra weight does affect gas mileage, rated at 15.5 L/ 10.8 U 100 km (city/hwy). Power is effectively translated via a smooth shifting 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, unique in its class. Sedona's dual sliding doors open easily and all door openings offer easy access to the interior. The rear hatch seems heavily spring-loaded for easy open ing but featherweight females may feel they are doing chin-ups when they try to pull the hatch closed again. That heaviness thing showing up again. Inside, the passenger space is open and userfriendly. There are three power access points from front to back, plenty of cupholders, map pockets and storage spaces - a lockable box under the passenger seat, overhead storage and three, count 'em, three glove boxes including one on top o f the centre mod ule (a la Subaru Forester). The seats are firm but comfy and second-row and third-row seats recline, slide forward and rearward, and can be removed, if necessary. Although, jeez, next time, I'll get some help because they are, um m ,. . heavy. Do I sense a theme here? The Kia Sedona comes in two trim levels - entry level LX and slightly upscale EX models. Even the LX base model comes well-equipped with full instrumentation including tach, air condi tioning, power group, heated mirrors, privacy glass, independently controlled rear heat, front wiper deicer, tilt steering, variable intermittent wipers, rear wiper, and an AM/FM/CD stereo. The Kia Sedona LX boast Canada's lowest mini van price - $24,595.The Sedona EX bumps up the content quotient with a little more chrome on the out side, a little more faux woodgrain on the inside, ABS brakes, alloy wheels, roof rack, power flip-open rear quarter windows, keyless entry, fog lamps, power front seats, second row captain's chairs and a better AM/FM/CD/Cassette sound system with two extra tweeters thrown in. All this and, don't tell Honda, a folding extendable table in the rear. The Kia Sedona EX lists for $27,595. Adding the remaining acces sories -leather, sunroof etc., bumps the price for the all-inclusive Sedona EX Luxury to $29,595. Those prices, holding under the $30K level for a range of substantially well-equipped product pack ages, rival any other offering in the minivan market segment. And combined with competitive quality, warranty and safety levels, have made the Kia Sedona worth noticing. And worth comparing with a test drive.
