Halton Region has erected a new water tower with final completion set for later this fall. In its fifth month of construction, a major step was made yesterday (Tuesday). Morning commuters in the Burnhamthorpe Road and Trafalgar Road area were given a glimpse of the water tank rising up the new tower. The tank's ascent began at 7:30 a.m. and was expected to have reached its final height of 50 metres by noon. The new tower will provide supplementary water storage and fire flow storage as required for existing consumers and future growth. The regional project was identified in the South Halton Servicing Plan in 1994. and was initiated in February by Burlington's Landmark Construction. The new tower is located on the north side of Burnhamthorpe Road East, west of Trafalgar Road. Bruce Kitchen, director of Halton Region's engineering services, said the project has been carried out without a hitch. "It's been pretty smooth. We had some trouble with frost in the beginning, but construction has been on time," he said. To raise the tank, approximately 35 jacks were positioned at the top of the support structure and cables were used to slowly hoist it. Three construction work ers stationed at the top of the tower mon itored the lifts to ensure a proper ascent, while two workers also surveyed the tank's progress from ground level. Kitchen said that once the tank had reached the top, it would then be sealed to the concrete support structure, which is comprised of 42,636 kg (94.000 lb.) of reinforcing steel. The tank floor and roof should be complete by the end of August, with offices and storage rooms to be built inside the tower base. Mechanical, elec trical, yard piping and site works are expected to be completed by October 2002. with final commission of the tank scheduled for November. Measuring 27 metres in diameter and 15.59 metres in height, the elevated tank has a volume of 5,700 cubic metres, which willhold 5,700.000 litres of water. Estimated project cost, including yard piping, watermain and storm sewers, electrical and mechanical services, site grading, access road, landscaping and fencing, is $3.8 million. Kitchen said that when growth was originally foreseen in the Dundas Street and Trafalgar Road areas, it had to be determined whether a reservoir or water tower would be required. The latter option was decided upon since considerably more elevation would be needed for a reservoir. As for final touches on the tank, once everything has been completed, Halton Regional Chair Joyce Savoline, said let tering would be done on each side. "It will be a new way of identifying Oakville and Halton Region," she said, adding that the lettering would be visible to the northeast and southwest sides. According to HARP (Halton Alarm Response and Protection) Ltd. president Cam Roberts, two furtive figures were seen entering the dealership's lot around 3 a.m. thanks to cameras located at the property and watched from HARP's main monitoring station. Security staff were dispatched as Halton Regional Police were sum moned, including a police services dog from Hamilton. Upon their arrival, the suspects' stolen car was blocked and the two thieves -- who were intent on smashing vehicle windows so they could take the jacks and steal the rims -- fled the scene. One of them was cornered -- in the Sixteen Mile Creek/QEW area -- and slightly injured by the dog. A 16-year old male who cannot be named under the Young Offenders Act has been charged with mischief under $5,000 and posses sion of stolen property. At press time the second suspect remained at large. The bust illustrates the success of HARP's network of surveillance cam eras and infrared perimeter alarms which signal the monitoring station and allow staff to zoom in on specific areas of the property in question.
