D 2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 10, 2002 `Horns take to the air in 66-19 win over Oshawa Oakville Longhorns coach Tony Molnar predicts good things down the road for the Oshawa Hawkeyes despite rout ing them 66-19 in Northern Football Conference (NFC) action on Sunday. The pesky Hawkeyes, in their second year in the NFC, managed to stay with the 'Horns to start, down just 7-6 after the first quarter. But the 'Horns, showing why they're the nine time NFC league and playoff champions as well as two-time defending national champions, pulled away, leading 28-6 at the half and 42-19 at the end of three quarters. 'They're not a bad team,' said coach Molnar. 'They have a good foundation. They have size and speed.' As well, he said, they're backed by a strong organization. With their blitz-crazy defence, they managed to all but shut down the 'Horns running game to a measly 109 yards - 98 of them by Derwin Phillips. Mind you, that did leave a number of receivers open which the "Horns pounced upon for413 yards and seven touchdowns. The 'Horns other two touchdowns came off punt returns by Dave Dinnall, including a spectacular 88-yard return. For the record, the seven touchdowns in the air were caught by Mike Dingsdale ( 2 - 1 2 and 34 yards), Colin Grant (2 - 23 and 176 yards), A1 Kawa (20 yards), Rick Rodrigues (13 yards) and Stephen Moore (48 yards). Oakville's Dana Segin was good on nine of nine converts (for nine points) and closed the game out with a field goal (for three points). Keeping Track: Wallace meet The Oakville Beaver presents, here, the Wallace track and field meet which was held on June 18 (after being postponed). It represents the final installment of our school track and field coverage. The Wallace meet was one of four elementary meets run by the Halton-public board. In addition, the Beaver ran all three Halton Catholic board elementary meets as well as local results from three Halton high school meets (G-HAC, regional and OFSAA). The Wallace meet was cancelled on two prior occasions due to the stormy spring weather. Fortunately, the third time was a charm, especially for host school Pilgrim Wood. Not only did they work hard to help set up and run the meet but they `ran off' with four of the six age group pennants as well as the overall championship. The seven schools competing were as follows. OAKVILLE: Abbey Lane (AL). Heritage Glen (HG) and Pilgrim Wood (PW). BURLINGTON: Brant Hills (BH), C.H. Norton (CHN) and Tecumseh (Tec). ACTON: M.S. Bennett (MSB). PENNANT STANDINGS JUNIOR GIRLS: Tecumseh (78). Heritage Glen (74) and Pilgrim W ood (66). JUNIOR BOYS: Tecumseh (111), M.S. It was a great success on all levels. We're proud to report that we raised over $35,000 worth of contributions for Ian Anderson House and The Oakville Children's Choir. It goes without saying that we would not have been able to accom plish this donation without the support of everyone who was involved. Ian Anderson House will put these much-needed funds to immediate use in support of palliative in-house hospice care in our com munity. The Oakville Children's Choir will use the funds to help pay for their Canadian Tour in 2002. On behalf of the 4th Annual Premier Charity Golf Classic organizing committee, Ian Anderson House, and the Oakville Children's Choir, thank you, again, to everyone who generously supported this year's tournament. Collectively, more than $90,000 from our four tournaments have been given out to worth while local charities. And second was good old fashioned hard work by the CONNECTIONS staff along with sup port from their friends and colleagues in the financial services industry and from the hospital and the Oakville Beaver. And third, and most, important, was the support from the community. As usual, the foursomes were filled to capacity. And equally as important was the contribution from individuals and corporations who helped out with the many sponsorship opportunities avail able as well as for the always well stocked prize table. For anyone wanting to chip in again this year, to help raise money for our community hospital, please call Don Vince at 845-9793.
