The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday July 10, 2002 Procor donates $2,500 to library for kids Book Packs The Oakville Public Library's (OPL) efforts in promoting liter acy have been rewarded with a $2,500 donation from Procor Ltd. OPL's efforts to enrich the quality of life in the community by creating innovative environ ments that promote reading and inspire lifelong learning are real ized in its newest early literacy program. Book Pack Take-Out @ your library. This donation will be used towards the Library's Book Pack Take-Out @ your library pro gram. Colourful kid-sized back packs will be filled with the newest and best picture books for children aged three to six that they can sling over their shoul der and take home to enjoy. Each item in the backpacks is pre-selected and will include some of the most beautifully illustrated and written titles as well as age appropriate non-fiction books. The library wishes to fulfill several goals with the project: Offer ease o f borrowing books for children and their time-constrained parents and caregivers through pre-selected materials. Raise awareness of the value of shared reading - the most important 20 minutes of your day is spent reading with your child. Introduce children and their caregivers to the best children's authors and the finest age-appropriate materials available. Encourage a lifelong love of reading and a library habit. Christmas in July at downtown store In an attempt to beat the summer heat, Mary Keepsakes is holding its first Christmas in July. During the two-week event, which starts on Saturday, July 13, the store at 132 Trafalgar Rd. will be transformed into a winter wonderland. "We're hoping that some people will be con fused as to what the temperature outside should really read when they see the store," said Mary Murphy, owner of Mary's Keepsakes. "Our elves are busily preparing for the event which will feature Christmas carols, themed dis plays and holiday baking." In the spirit of giving, Mary's Keepsakes will be accepting food donations for the Fareshare Foodbank. And, the store will be open for Oakville's Midnight Madness on Friday July 19, weather per mitting. "When I came here from Korea in July 1998 I didn't speak a word of English." Today, Jee Yeon Lim, 19, speaks the language perfectly without an accent. She became proficient in English by "talking as many peo ple as possible." The OAC graduate from St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School is one of three winners of $500 scholarships awarded last week to local OAC graduates "When I first came to Loyola," she continued, "I joined the year book committee, taking photo graphs." She was the Grade 12 representative on the school's Athletic Council, and head of its photo committee. In explaining her qualifications for award at an Oakville Zonta Club meeting held at Wellspring, Jee explained she started the school's social justice group, and launched Think Fast, a 30-hour famine, two years ago. She plans to go to the University of Toronto to study Life Sciences. Nausheen Hamidani, 18, `fast tracked' her way through Grade 12 and her OACs to graduate this year and is accepted in Honours Mathematics/Actuarial Sciences co-op program in at the University of Waterloo. She organized her school's multicultural festival last year to promote multiculturalism, tutored a teacher's daughter in math, and takes care of her seven-year-old brother. "Most of my life revolves around him. I am devoted to school and my little brother." She explained Actuarial Sciences is the "under pinning" for making "decisions in the financial industry" for the insurance, stocks, investments and mutual funds industry. Currently she works at KFC as a supervisor. And Tiffiny Miconi, 18, an OAC graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas is going to Sir Wilfrid Laurier University to study com munications. She was co-president of her school's athletic council, was a member the school's student coun cil, and the senior volleyball team. And, she's played soccer since age six. She was the DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) Halton high school student repre sentative. Tiffiny was also involved with organizing he school's Walk for Justice, participated in the school's musical. She works part-time as a receptionist at The Sanctuary Spa in downtown Oakville, and has landed a job with a summer event planning company.
