Museum receives unique 1868 wooden bicycle There's no better time than summer for a new bike, or even an old one -- just ask the folks at the Oakville M useum at Erchless Estate. Last spring, Gayle Murray donated a wooden bicycle, circa 1868, to the museum. Murray donated what museum Marketing and Developm ent Facilitator Suzy Godefroy called "an intriguing piece of history" to the Oakville M useum on behalf of her father, Lloyd Willis, 90, who currently resides in Edmonton, Alberta. "On behalf of the Town of Oakville and specifically Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate, we would like to thank Gayle Murray for her gift to the museum collection," said Godefroy. "This wooden bicycle is a very unique and an appealing addition to the Oakville Museum Collections. As well as expand ing our ability to interpret the social and technological history of recreational activities in the 19th century, this object will attract a great deal of interest from a wide range of visitors," said Godefroy. Murray and her family have treasured the bicycle they donat ed for generations. The family's decision to make a gift of it to the O akville M useum was inspired by their love for the bicycle and the family history it shared, as well as by their desire to share their enthusiasm for this piece with the community. "As a result, many future generations will also be able to enjoy the sense of fun and won der that happens merely in view ing the primitive machine, and trying to imagine what it might have been like to ride," said Deborah Hudson, the museum's curator of collections. The w ood crafted bicycle closely resembles the Velocipede or Boneshaker. The Velocipede was first developed by French Coachbuilders, Ernest & Pierre Michaux o f Paris in 1861. Velocipede means "fast feet" and was the foundation and motivation for its name. Ernest & Pierre Michaux cre ated the Velocipede through the modification of a hobbyhorse by fitting cranks and pedals to the axle. The bicycle dates back to 1868, and hence, the model was at the peak of its lifecycle, and the design had been modified from the original velocipede in 1871. . The ride on the Velocipede was cumbersome and heavy, and due to the lack o f mechanical advantages gained from turning the Velocipede's small wheel, the invention o f the Penny Farthings Bicycle came in 1871. Penny Farthings was the solution to the Velocipede or Boneshaker, as it covered more distance with each revolution of its massive wheel. Both the Velocipede and the Penny Farthings Bicycles were very fashionable. However, despite the mechanical advan tages of the Penny Farthings, it only lasted for approximately 20 years after its inventions because safer bicycles were developed. Royal Gourdie was the origi nal owner o f the bike. His daughter Jean married Lloyd Willis and had daughter Gayle. Lloyd Willis picked up the bicycle in the late 1930s when he was visiting from Edmonton. The bicycle was shipped back to Edmonton, and he kept it for several years.
