Last years Stolen canoe holds special memories A canoe belonging to Mickie Daniel and David Angas was stolen from The Oakville Club last weekend. "It was stolen from the canoe rack at the club," said Daniel. "This rack was in a secure area of the club, and the canoe was secured to the rack. It had been cut free. "Whoever did it must have scouted out the area. Nothing else was taken." Daniel said the 16-foot, canvas-cov ered, cedar strip canoe was still in the rack on Friday night. "This canoe holds a lot of memories for us," she continued. "It had been in the lobby and executive boardroom of the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa." In late June of 2000, Angas and Daniel paddled from Kingston to Ottawa, arriving on July 1 to celebrate Canada Day in grand style as they car ried their canoe up Rideau Street into the famous hotel - much to the delight of hotel staff and thousands who lined the street. "History has been made," said Angus at the time. "This hotel was built in 1912 and never has there been a canoe portaged into the hallowed halls of this well appointed establishment." They called their 225-kilometre pad dle along the Cataraqui and Rideau Rivers the Millennium Challenge, and raised funds for the United Way of Oakville and the Oakville YMCA. It also held special memories for Angas. He bought the canoe in April 1999 as the winning bidder at an Easter Seals fundraiser in Toronto. "When I discovered the canoe was donated by the camp where I went as a boy, Camp Nominingue in Quebec, I started bidding in earnest," he said.
