Ward 1 concerns focus on harbour, bridge and mall continued from p.1 outside of Oakville... something that will bring in some teenage dollars," Brennan said, not mentioning where in the Town's budget he'd find the money. Burton said there's been a "generations-old policy" in Oakville that harbour users, not the Oakville taxpayers, support. "I stand with the traditional Oakville way of dealing with the harbours -- they're self-supporting," he said. Mayoral candidate John McLaughlin disagreed and said the Town should carry the cost. "The answer is everyone should share, just like with the hospital, it's for everybody," he said, adding the funding would come from 10 per cent in budget cuts proposed in his platform. Candidates for Regional and Town council also fielded questions about the once-slated Wyecroft Bridge, which was removed from the Town's 10-year capital forecast last year. Construction was slated to begin in 2015 on the structure that would connect Wyecroft Road to Harvester Road in Burlington. troversy was between two "feuding landlords" and was at a stalemate despite countless hours of negotiations. "We have made concentrated efforts to bring these two feuding landlords together and all we get is a complete, `We don't want to talk to each other'," Robinson said, adding Bronte was in "bad shape, economically" but an Economic Development Committee was formed in 2012 to help bolster the area. "I agree with the comments about Bronte being a mess, but it's on the road to recovery and it's not going to happen, it is happening," he said. Stephen Maloney said residents have told him the Bronte mall dispute is their No. 1 issue in the campaign. Maloney said the ongoing dispute is absolutely ridiculous. "The Town council of Ward 1 has a responsibility to fix that problem that is bugging people...." Advance voting polls in Oakville are open now through Oct. 17. Election Day is Oct. 27. Regional and Town council candidate Linda Oliver answered first and said when she and the BVRA inquired about the bridge, it was "on the books" and that she'd "seen it on paper." "We were told at that time, it was going to be brought up in 2015 and put back on the capital budget," she said. "I would definitely ensure that it would be, if that was the plan, and it sounds like it is." Alan Johnston conceded the bridge is not in the 10-year forecast, but he'd advocate seeing if it were needed during next year's scheduled review. "Where I think the priority for traffic congestion lies is in building an underpass at Burloak at the railroad tracks," Johnston said. "People will use Burloak if they don't have to stop at the railroad tracks. That will take traffic off Bronte Road and ease the congestion." Sean O'Meara said he'd made this a campaign issue and plans to advocate for its building, offering his own answer for why the bridge has been delayed. "Why is the Wyecroft Bridge not already on the 10-year capital plan? Why don't we have a voice in this Ward standing up, getting things done and not saying `well, we need to look at it, we'll put it on the plan next year'?" O'Meara said, nearly drowned out by the crowd's applause. Also on the minds of voters, Tuesday night, was the chain-linked fence that cordons off a section of parking at Bronte Village Mall, as well as the overall economic state of the area.
