www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 9, 2014 | 12 by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff Oliver wins Liberal nomination for Oakville Real People with Real Stories and Real Needs Rob & Laura's Story Rob and Laura both worked in part-time positions for 20 hours per week. While they've tried and tried, they have been unable to secure full-time jobs with more hours and medical benefits. Together they shared an apartment with Laura's mother and worked hard to provide for themselves and their daughter. Each month they just seemed to cover the basic necessities of life. When Laura's mother moved out, things started to unravel as they were left struggling to pay the rent. Then, to make matters worse, Rob lost his job. Suddenly, facing a significant monthly shortfall, they reached out for emergency assistance from Halton Region to get through the first month, but the following month's rent fell short and they were in imminent danger of being evicted. Unsure of what to do, they turned to Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) in search of help. Each day KSM deals with families like Rob and Laura's who need basic, practical help. And while the provision of daily food, community support and free after school care helps, retaining their rent is still not guaranteed and is an ongoing struggle. The harsh reality is that more and more people in dire need are finding their way to our door each day. Even in Oakville. Join us as we come alongside families in need like Rob and Laura's to support and encourage them moving forward. Please consider making a monthly donation to help KSM continue providing the essential support and assistance for our neighbours in need. YOUR NEIGHBOUR Oakville resident John Oliver, former president and CEO of Halton Healthcare Services (HHS), was selected last Thursday (Oct. 2) as the Liberal candidate for the Oakville riding in next year's federal election. The 19-year resident of town bested lawyer Jennifer Malabar, also of Oakville. In a blog post on the Oakville Federal Liberal Association's website Friday, an entry thanked Malabar for running a great campaign. "Our candidates and their teams are to be congratulated for bringing in new John Oliver members and invigorating the Liberal brand in Oakville," the post said. Oliver retired from HHS on April 30, concluding a career that stretched back to 1990. He announced his interest in representing the Liberals in early August. At the time, Oliver said the prospect of joining the Liberals was "very exciting, given how Justin Trudeau has energized both the party and Liberalism in this country." During his tenure as head of HHS, Oliver oversaw several major capital projects, including the conception, capitalization and construction of the $2.7 billion new Oakville hospital, set to open in late 2015. In 2013, he was presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal. Oliver noted several Oakville business leaders backed him in his bid for the Liberal seat.
