Play it again: Expanded scoreboard at Sixteen Mile to have video, replays By Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver staff 23 | Friday, October 3, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Just four years after it opened, the main rink at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex is getting an upgrade. Soon you won't have to worry about missing that highlight-reel goal while you were texting a friend. By the spring, the 1,500-seat arena will have a video scoreboard capable of showing replays. The `new' scoreboard won't really be new, but an expansion of the existing four-sided scoreboard that currently hangs over centre ice. Four video panels will be added, creating an eight-sided board. Sixteen Mile Sports Complex manager Todd Carey said installing a video board at the time the arena opened in 2010 could have cost as much as $1-million, which seemed to be an unnecessary expense. "At the time, video technology just wasn't as common," he said. "At the time, most OHL arenas didn't have it, but it's much more common now." The scoreboard on the main rink at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex will get a facelift in the spring. It will be expanded to include video panels with replay capabilities. | photo by Graham Paine -- Oakville Beaver It will cost $160,000 to expand the existing scoreboard. Sixteen Mile has played host to a number of events, including an American Hockey League game, an Ontario Hockey League game, the Provincial Women's Hockey League championship weekend and, for the past two years, the Ontario Junior Hockey League's Governor's Showcase and the provincial high school hockey championships. But continuing to host such events means keeping pace with other venues. "You need things like this to stay competitive," said Michael Brennan, the town's senior manager of recreation and operations. "There's an economic benefit if we continue to attract events and we don't want to lose out on them because we don't have the technology." "What used to be a bonus is now something you need to host a provincial or national event," Carey said. "Having an already desirable facility, this will make it that much more attractive as a host location." Carey said the video board will also enhance the spectator experience for Oakville Blades games as well as annual events like Minor Oaks Hockey Association and Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association tournaments and Skate Oakville's annual ice show. The scoreboard will be able to show replays if the game is being recorded and the arena is able to tap into that feed. It will also be able to display pre-loaded images and graphics, such as a player profile. Carey said adding the video panels is a fairly simple process that will take about two days. He said that will likely take place in the spring when the impact on the arena's users can be minimized. Football game kicks off pink events at Iroquois Ridge Continued from pg. 22 this month with the school band and choir performing and a Pink in the Rink game when hockey season gets underway. Other school teams also get involved by wearing pink. The football game remains the biggest fundraising event. There will be a barbecue at the game and pink cupcakes for sale. There will also be a raffle and silent auction for donated prizes that include a signed DeMar DeRozan jersey and a Seattle Seahawks jersey (donated by Sports Obsession in Burlington), a golf foursome for Lionhead Golf & Country Club and a $100 gift certificate for Joe Dog's in Burlington. Haas, who lost her grandmother to breast cancer and has an aunt battling cancer, took part in a Paddle for the Cure event organized by her cousin. She said it is great to have her school so involved in raising awareness. She designed `Power in Pink' sweatshirts that are sold at the school, along with toques, T-shirts and pink bows and hair ties. "It's a big tradition and we want to keep it going and make it as big of an event as possible." And Iroquois Ridge has taken steps to ensure the pink events continue for many years. Last year, Haas, Ratcliffe and Arronato were mentored by senior students to help them to organize this year's events. They will do the same for three Grade 11 students this year. Reeve said the campaign has been a success because of the support throughout the school, from principal Deb Robinson to staff, to the students. "(Cancer) has touched so many lives," said Reeve, who has two players on his team who have lost parents to the disease. "It's an emotional day and we have a duty to help spread awareness."
