It was one of more than 140 events across Canada that saw an estimated 50,000 trees planted. At top left, Mia Albanese, 11, examines a fallen Red Oak leaf and acorn in the sunshine. Below left, White Oaks Secondary School student Jackie Emmerson, 16, separates tree roots for planting. Above, centre, Town of Oakville Forestry Manager John McNeil, right, and France Fournier, marketing and community relations at Whole Foods Market Oakville, place mulch over a new Accolade elm tree, a hybrid tree resilient to Dutch Elm Disease (DED). This planting took place Wednesday, Sept. 24, which was National Tree Day, as the Town celebrated National Forest Week with the two community events. In addition to planting the hybrid elm, the Town also treated an existing elm tree with a fungicide to provide multi-year protection against DED. While the American elm tree had almost been eliminated in Oakville, plantings of Accolade, Triumph and Liberty elms (all resistant to DED) in recent years has resulted in more than 3,000 elms now thriving throughout town. Both Whole Foods and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) provided funding for last week's events, which added up to fun for families, including, above right, Calvin Bates, 6, and his mom Shana Bates.
