www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 2, 2014 | 28 Swim, Walk for Mental Health benefits REACH Oakville's Frank Zamuner is once again diving in to raise funds for local mental wellness programs during the sixth annual Swim or Walk for Mental Health event Sunday (Oct. 5). Held at Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Rd. W., this year's event will support Halton Healthcare Services' (HHS) Recovery through Education for Adolescents and Children in Halton (REACH) program. "This year, the (HHS) Outpatient Mental Health Program, in partnership with the Halton District School Board is expanding the REACH program to provide an additional classroom in an Oakville high school that provides academic programming with intensive mental health treatment," stated a press release. "This will allow the student to effectively reintegrate back into the regular school system. Your support will help make a difference to hundreds of children and youths living in Oakville who need immediate care." Zamuner founded the swim as a means to fundraise for local mental health programs after he overcame the challenge of experi- Health "Connected to your Community" encing and living with depression in the wake of heart surgery. The Oakville resident began the swims during the summer at Brookdale Pool, but a subsequent change of venue to Appleby College increased the involvement of youths in the fundraiser. Zamuner has set this year's fundraising goal at $35,000. A family event The event consists of a charity swim, from 7:30-11:30 a.m., at Appleby College's indoor pool facility, as well as a leisurely walk around the Oakville campus, running from 9-11:30 a.m., in which organizers invite families with children and pets to participate. "Whether you are swimming or walking, we encourage you to bring your family and help break the stigma associated with mental health," stated the news release.
