The world changed a lot as a result of 9/11 continued from p.1 trip across the border became more time consuming. "It became arduous to get back and forth across the border, especially in the days right after, because you had U.S. and Canadian (border guards) on both sides," she said. "There were dogs, there were military and that went on for quite a while." Nearly 3,000 lives were lost on Sept. 11, 2001, including 24 Canadians. Leading the ceremony at St. Paul's was Chaplain Bruce Lacillade, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He received the Purple Heart for his service during the conflict after a marine helicopter, in which he was travelling, was shot down. Lacillade moved to Canada following the war, and went on to be 25-year member of the Burlington Fire Department before retiring and becoming a chaplain. "The world changed a lot -- especially for the U.S -- after 9/11," said Lacillade, the Purple Heart displayed across his breast pocket of his blazer with a collection of other military medals. "I think it was a wake-up and we're still trying to stay awake." He said 9/11 is now as much about reflection as it is about supporting each other. "It's become a national day of service and we're getting stronger by remembering we're all in this together as a country," he said. "We take care of each other and do something nice for each other, like the pay-itforward concept." Oakville MP Terence Young also encouraged Canadians to take up Prime Minister Stephen Harper's "call to action" to participate in charitable activities and community service. "Today, we thank all volunteers who give of their time, put their skills to work, demonstrate acts of kindness and compassion, and willingly make sacrifices to better the lives of others," Young said. "The dedicated volunteers of Oakville inspire us to rise to the occasion and join them in such meaningful work." 5 | Friday, September 12, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A STEP BEYOND IN CARE Do you have: Pictured, from left, are: Carla Baylor, Chaplain Bruce Lacillade, and Tracy Hudson at St. Paul's United Church during the Women's Club of Oakville's Sept. 11 memorial ceremony.
