It's eyeing 2.2 acres on the former Ontario Hydro corridor land just north of the leash-free area that runs east from Eighth Line, north of the Iroquois Ridge Community Centre and next to Iroquois Ridge High School. Property facing Eighth Line would be severed and sold to a developer for houses. The centre parcel of land would house the shelter. The rear third would be for a four-storey apart ment, also to be sold off, potentially as affordable housing. The Oakville Salvation Army Lighthouse would be a "Centre for Emergency and Transitional Housing and Support," said a Sally Ann Community Briefing document. The Lighthouse began operating in central Oakville in 2000. It now has six beds in a small house on Kerr Street, but is set to relocate temporarily in July to the former Chamber of Commerce Tourist Information Centre next to the QEW at Kerr Street. The Oakville Salvation Army has been in Oakville for 51 years and is known worldwide for offering aid and compos sion to anyone in need. It has more than 100 years' experience running shelter programs in Canada. After searching for two years, the Salvation Army chose a site on a main road, near public transit, recreation, schools and jobs. Statistics show that 10 per cent of the people of Halton live in poverty -- often a pay cheque away from losing their home or going without food. They're from all socioeconomic back grounds, from nurses, waiters, teachers and secretaries, to stu dents. single parents, adults and seniors. Residents can stay at The Lighthouse from 1 to 30 days.
