The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 19, 2002 - C 3 World Changers brings 300 youth volunteers How do you change the world? One community at a time. This is the premise behind World Changers, a group of 300 youth volun teers from the all across North America who will bring their hammers, nails, and enthusiasm to Halton Region this summer. From July 27 until Aug. 3, Grade 712 students from across North America will partner with youth from Oakville in a variety of projects in the region, including renovations to homes in lower income areas, clean ups of walk ing trails, working with the local food banks and hosting free splash pads, bas ketball and soccer camps for local youth. What's most impressive is that the work they will do for the citizens of Oakville, Burlington and Milton won't cost taxpayers a dime. World Changers is a faith-based pro gram that teaches youth the importance of giving back to the community, said Jeff Hill, youth pastor at The Sanctuary, A Church fo r Your Heart Mind and Spirit of Oakville that is sponsoring the visit. "I'm so impressed with the profes sionalism of World Changers. It is a top notch missions project for youth. I have been on different missions project, but World Changers is top notch from the beginning to the end of the week. "They are passionate about youth doing hands-on missions," said Hill, who came to work in Canada after he and his wife were on a previous World Changers mission trip in 2000 in Kingston, Ont. This volunteer ministry, started in 1990 by the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, has seen more than 100,000 students repair more than 6,500 homes in communities in North America and around the world. Several other churches in Halton region including Chartwell Baptist, Calvary Baptist and The Meeting House, Burloak Christian Fellowship are also working in co-operation with The Sanctuary and World Changers which means youth from local area churches will be hammering and nail ing, running sports camps and engaging in other volunteer activities, right along side their American counterparts. Each student has paid $295 U.S. each for a chance to change a little part of the world--in this case, Halton Region. Some of the work already slated includes: Cleaning and painting apartments for those in mental health housing. Working with Kerr Street Minis tries to provide day camp for low income children. Providing sports camps in com munity parks and recreation centers around Oakville including Coronation Park, Lakeside Park, Lawson Park and River Oaks Community Centre. Helping Kerr Street Ministries convert a parking garage to storage and classroom space. The Halton project is one of only three World Changers projects in Canada in 2002; there is also one taking place in Montreal, Quebec and Cornwall, Ontario. Younger students will not be partici pating in construction, however they will assist in running sports camps, helping keep the construction crews supplied etc. Wherever it goes, World Changers attracts a crowd and attention, said Hill. The group was featured each day in the local newspaper during its project in Kingston, Ont. "If you look at the accomplishments it's had in such a short time, 13 years, it's amazing. This year alone, there are 25,000 youth involved in 91 projects worldwide," said Hill. Part and parcel with the community work component is Christian ministry. Hill said the program not only betters the lives of the community where World Changers works, but it's a life changing spiritual experience for its participants. "I know a girl named Amy who came to a World Changers project with a lot of baggage. By the end of the week, God had done a huge work in her life. She committed that week to be sold out for God and that was because of World Changers." The Town of Oakville has been so impressed with World Changers and its willingness to help the community for free, that it's helping to provide a com munity block party at Coronation Park on Aug. 1, the Thursday night that World Changers is here, said Hill. As part of the project, there will also be nightly worship services held for the youth, which is taking place at White Oaks Secondary School and is open to the community. In North America, students have not only worked at more than 1,000 con struction and ministry sites, but they have also donated close to $150,000 to a fund designated to help further youth ministry and missions in Canada. Recent changes have facilitated the emergence of a self advocate move ment. Self advocates are individuals with an intellectual disability who are taught to make choices for themselves. They engage in an education process which teaches rights, responsibilities, commu nity awareness and most importantly, how to approach situations in order to make your needs and wants known. This is not always easy, as commu nication difficulties may interfere. Community Living Oakville is actively supporting the development of self advocates within the people that we support. For the first time, self advocates attended the annual conference for Community Living Ontario. They par ticipated in self esteem workshops and learned about rights. It is not an easy situation for some one who has grown up in the custodial care model to suddenly find themselves being asked what they think and what they think should happen in a given sit uation. The growth of a self advocate does not happen over night. It takes patience to assist the intellectually challenged individual to understand boundaries and how to approach situations. But it is imperative, that they be involved in decisions that affect their lives. she said, "Then why don't you have a summer dance and I could come?" Others have gone further with self advocacy. Kelly has approached the mayor and requested she look into Sunday bus service. Kelly, like most of the people being supported, relies on public transit. When the volunteer driver for Special Olympics swimming could no longer drive, she tried to find a replace ment. When none was found, she wrote to the mayor to ask about bus trans portation. Kelly is also aware that when we move to our new facilities on Wyecroft Road, bus service may be difficult for some people who have to travel to doc tors on a regular basis. The mayor has replied she is refer ring the matter to the appropriate coun sel board for review. Kelly is clearly putting her self advo cate skills to work. Self advocates meet within their community association to learn how to identify important issues. They bring their life experiences and explore diffi culties. They learn how solve prob lems. Self advocates stand up for their rights and the rights of others with an intellectual disability. They are trying to make meaningful changes within their life. They learn that change may be difficult but not impossible. Self advocates learn to value their own opin ions. Maybe more of us should take a lesson from Community Living Oakville's self advocates. Through biweekly meetings, self advocates are learning how to look at specific issues, identify the parameters, reflect on their rights and needs and learn about consequences of choices. They would like to be full participating partners in life decisions. At Community Living Oakville we have seen the value of the self advocate movement.
