Newmarket Flyers slaughter Wextord NEWMARKET The Newmarket Flyers edged up in the Provincial Junior A stan- dings last Thursday night when they trounced the Wexford Raiders 8-3. The two point win moved the Flyers into seventh spot in the standings with 21 points. tieing them with the Markham Waxers and the Wexford Raiders. The Flyers had tied the then fth place Aurora Tigers the week before in Newmarket, but their victory over the Wexford Raiders was their first win at home for quite awhile. NEWMARKET Gary Thorburn pumped in six goals for Doug Nigh's Esso last weekend in a Peewee house league match, leading them to a 12-6 win over Simons Aluminum. Teammate John Taylor added a hat trick with Rod Phillips, Michael Thorns and Danny McDonald scoring once. Tom Tidman scored the third Flyers power play goal at 10.12 of the second period and Terry Porter notched the sixth Flycr goal a few minutes later. putting Newmarket ahead 6-0. The F lyers play the third place RoyaJ York Royals tomorrow night in Newmarket Tigers devour Hamilton O AURORA - The Aurora Tigers came back from losing 7- 3 to the Waxers in Markham last Friday night to defeat the bottom-place Hamilton Mountaineers 9-3 last Sunday night in Aurora. Aurora used goalie Glen ,Weirs in net for both games after their first string goalie Dave Tetley received an ankle injury in the Dixie game in Aurora the Monday before. -., Aurora won the game 9-5. In last Sunday night s game, the strong Tiger defence kept the shots on their net at a minimum. Hamilton got only 19 shots on the Aurora mesh, while the Tigers pummelled the Hamith crease with 49 shots. Once Aurora had a sub- stantial lead they put in their back-up goalie Barton Brooks, who tended most of the third , period. Aurora scored four goals in the first and second periods and one in the last. Hamilton scored twice in the rst period and once in the last. ' The Mountaineers changed their goalies in the second perio%when they were losing 5- 2, ng out Chris Saija and pqu in Bob Beauchamp, but to no avail. The Mountains played a depressing game against Aurora. giving up the puck as often as they had it, and their goaltending seemed blinded by the onslaught of Tiger shots in all periods. Danny Shearer scored the rst Tiger marker on a power play and it was unassisted. Sandr Silvestri scored twice in the first period and assisted on two others in the game. Mario Giallonardo pumped in the fourth Tiger goal in the first period. . Manfred Wolfe picked up three assists in the first period and David Robinson helped on two more. Manfred Wolf went on to score an unassisted short handed goal in the second period and two more in the third for a hat trick. Tom Robertson tallied a short handed goal in the second and Chris Kurysh also scored in the second. - Assistin were: Bill Gray, Mario Gial onardo and Vince Giles. In the Markham game the Friday before. the Tigers were down 6-0 in the third period but came back to score three straight goals. "We hit seven posts in the third period with the Waxers. When we scored the three goals I thought we were going to win it." said owner-coach John 'Sikura. The Aurora scoring stopped there and the Waxers scored their seventh to take the game at 7-3.
