Rick Grainger the dealership's general manager, said, "You're going to have fun with this car." It wasn't an idle boast. The 2002 SVT Focus is a high-performance model of the Ford Focus. It is powered by a 170-hp engine with a six-speed transmission. That's a lot of power in a relatively small 168,1 in. (4,270 mm) car. For the past year I have been driving a compact sedan with an automatic transmission. Before that I had driven manual transmission vehicles for more than 20 years. In a short year, I had forgotten just how much fiin it can be to drive a car with manual transmission, espe cially one as powerful and responsive as the Ford SVT Focus. The Ford 2002 SVT Focus Web site describes the power behind the vehicle this way, "this `Hot hatch' represents SVT's most technologically advanced car to date, featuring a six-speed transmission and an engine with a variable intake cam timing (VCT) and a dual stage intake (DSI) manifold. Powered by a modified version of Ford's DOHC Zetec 1-4 engine, the new SVT Focus powers into the fast lane with 170 hp at 7.000 rpm and 145 lb.-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. The VCT and DSI engine technologies allow the engine to produce 85% of maximum torque coupled with highrevving horsepower makes the SVT Focus one of the most responsive and fun-to-drive cars on the market today." But I prefer Grainger's less technical description: "It's like being strapped onto the front-end of an arrow." Now anyone can pack a lot power into a little car. That alone doesn't make the car fun to drive, or more importantly -- safe. For braking power Ford has installed a four-channel, four-sensor ABS system. The front brakes are 300mm (11.8) vented disc, single piston caliper and the rear brakes are 280 mm (11.0) solid disc, single-piston caliper. All I know is that it stops on a dime. And as far as handling is concerned, whether it's the rack and pinion power steering, the 17-inch wheels, the weight and balance of the car, the front/rear stabilizer bar, its size or its close proximity to the ground, this car comers beautifully. Its cornering ability can become infectious. At one point I drove it into an empty church parking lot at night to drive around in circles. I can't remember the last time I drove doughnuts in a parking lot. Like I said, it's a fun car to drive. As an added bonus, the small car's front end angles sharply to the ground and is invisible from the driver's seat. This gives the driver the illusion of being right on top of the road. The SVT Focus from Kennedy Ford came with about everything you want or need in a car, plus a few extras. For $27,240 the car comes with: driver/passenger air bags; height adjusted front safety belts, low fuel warning light; passive anti-theft system; remote keyless entry; engine block heater; rear spoiler; heated power mirrors; solar tinted glass; integrated fog lamps; rear wind/wiper washer; power windows and locks; floor console with cupholders; SVT sport seats; SVT instru mentation; and air conditioning. The test model included the audiophile package fea turing a six-disc CD player for $995; a cold weather package with heated seats and traction control for $595; and a power moonroof for $980. Toss in the federal excise tax and the price was $29,910. While the price may seem steep for a compact car, remember, this is a high-performance car, and the vehi cle comes with everything a high-performance car requires. "You do not have to bring it to a performance shop to enhance the car," said Grainger. It is also a limited-run car.
