Acts of arson prompt more patrol at Millstone Park by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, August 29, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Town of Oakville has asked Halton police to keep a closer eye on Millstone Park following two late night acts of arson that occurred there earlier this month. On Aug. 1, vandals set fire to a portable toilet within the Pine Glen Road/Millstone Drive park. Two weeks later, individuals set fire to a second portable toilet, which had recently been brought to the area to replace the first incinerated amenity. A slide on the nearby children's playground was also torched. To date, the damage estimate from these incidents stands at $1,500. This is not the first time the park has been the target of arson. During July of last year, the park's gazebo was set on fire. Area resident Richard Noronha said there has been a problem with late night partying in Millstone Park for years. "It's just getting worse," he said. "The parking lot is not lit at night and it is open, so you get people who will come in there and turn up the stereos in their cars and you will hear them partying in there...They'll get belligerent and you can hear them swearing in the middle of the night. You can hear them try- ing action to deal with the vandalism. "The police have been contacted and I have asked Halton police to do some additional patrols of the park. They do have their summerlong program where they have uniformed officers on bikes who are monitoring our parks and our trail systems," said Mark. "I have asked them to include Millstone in their rounds to see if we can either catch this person or at least make it visible that the police are out there so it doesn't happen again." Mark said he has also asked the Town's parks patrol staff to drop by Millstone on a regular basis to add an additional presence to the area. Noronha said he has noticed an increased This portable toilet was set afire on Aug. 1 and the first of two acts of arson that took place at Millstone Park in the span of weeks. | submitted photo police presence in the area since the fires, but said more is needed to really solve the problem. "I think the Town should light the park up, light the parking lot. That will be a deterrent. This way they can't hide. There is no cover of darkness," said Noronha. "I don't know whether the rest of the residents here will have an issue with that. Another option is to just close the park's gate at night. Most of these people are coming in here with their vehicles, so just close the gates." Mark said he is not aware of regular late night partying taking place in Millstone Park. Sheridan CEO keynote speaker at luncheon The president and CEO of Sheridan College will be the keynote speaker at the Burlington Chamber of Commerce's luncheon Wednesday (Sept. 3). Dr. Jeff Zabudsky will discuss "what it takes to guide one of Ontario's most distinguished post-secondary institutions as it makes the transition from college to university," stated a press release. The luncheon is scheduled for noon at the Burlington Golf & Country Club, 422 North Shore Blvd. E. Check-in for the event starts at 11:30 a.m. Tickets cost $50 for members, and $60 for non-members. Noronha said the late-night rowdiness is fairly consistent, usually running from 11 p.m. to 2-3 a.m. It mostly occurs over the weekend, but does occur on a weeknight from time to time, he noted. Noronha said he and other residents regularly call police, but this hasn't stopped the partygoers from returning on a different day. Chris Mark, director of the Town's Parks and Open Space Department, said the Town is tak- September start. LIMITED SPACE available for a A STEP BEYOND IN CARE Do you have: Salima Kassam Reg.
